Founded in 1993 in the heart of NYC by Hisa Ishioka, King Street Sounds has defined the underground house music scene with iconic records from the likes of Kerri Chandler Dennis Ferrer Blaze and Mood II Swing 🗽

Now, for the first time, King Street’s full story is told in an exclusive 38-minute documentary featuring footage from the legendary Paradise Garage, artist studio sessions and interviews with the leading figures who helped to shape house music history including Barbara Tucker Danny Krivit Dj David Morales Ultra Naté and many more.

Happy Birthday King Kerri Chandler

Having played a key role in shaping the landscape of house music and immortalising himself within the scene along the way, Kerri Chandler continues to push the boundaries of his live performance beyond pure DJ sets, incorporating live instruments and even playing reel-to-reel tape sets at recent shows. We’re proud to have Kerri as part of the King Street family, a journey which began with Mix The Vibe in 1997, through to the seminal Trionisphere album released in 2003, and many more iconic tracks to this day. Long live the King 👑

The story of King Street Sounds starts at the Paradise Garage in NYC. The legendary club was located at 84 King Street, and Hisa, our founder, was a regular visitor there. The soulful House music that Paradise Garage cultivated inspired Hisa to create a home for it, and to share this music to an audience beyond the dancefloors of NYC clubs. It was then that we saw the birth of King Street Sounds in 1993.

Paradise Garage is a keystone in dance and popular culture, as was an important cultural venue for Black and LGBT communities. Founded by sole proprietor Michael Brody, in a former parking lot building located in the Soho neighborhood, the Garage promoted dancing rather than verbal interaction, and was the first to place the DJ at the center of attention; most notably the late, great resident DJ Larry Levan. It closed its door in 1987, but the legend of Paradise Garage lives on.
