Tolkien Copied This 1,000-Year-Old Norse Myth

A thousand years before Tolkien wrote about a ring of power that corrupts everyone who touches it, the Vikings already had one. Andvaranaut: a golden ring forged by a dwarf, stolen by Loki, and cursed to destroy every single being who would ever own it. It turned a son into a father-killer, a prince into a dragon, and the greatest hero of the North into a co**se. This is the complete Norse saga Tolkien studied before writing The Lord of the Rings: the dead otter, the dwarf's curse, Fáfnir the dragon, the hero Sigurd, the Valkyrie betrayed by a ring - and the treasure still lying at the bottom of the Rhine.

Thor Lost to an Old Woman. The Reason Is Terrifying.

Thor, the strongest being in Norse mythology, walked into a giant's fortress and lost every single contest they put in front of him. A drinking horn he couldn't empty. A cat he couldn't lift. A footrace, an eating contest, and a wrestling match against a frail old nursemaid who forced the god of thunder down to one knee.

It sounds like a comedy. It isn't. Because what Thor was actually fighting that night was never what he was told, and when the king of the giants finally revealed the truth, he banned Thor from his land forever. Out of pure fear.

This is the myth of Thor at Utgard: the giant who wouldn't die, the rigged tournament, and one of the greatest twists in Norse mythology

Attack on Titan Copied This 1,000-Year-Old Giant.

Attack on Titan named its founding titan Ymir. That name is a thousand years older than the anime - and the original is far worse than anything Isayama put on screen.

In Norse mythology, Ymir was the first living thing in existence. Three brothers murdered him, cut his body open, and built the entire world out of the pieces. The mountains are his bones. The oceans are his blood. The sky over your head is the inside of his skull.

This is the Norse creation myth in full.

The gap that yawns before anything exists. The cow that licked the first god out of a block of salt over three days. The flood of blood that drowned an entire race - and the two survivors who escaped in a boat, and who every giant in every Norse story afterwards is descended from.

Then the first humans: two pieces of driftwood found on a beach, given breath, and fenced into a world walled with a dead man's eyebrows.

The nine realms, and the reason each one exists - including the one the the g gods handed to the people they tried to erase.

And Yggdrasil, the tree holding all nine worlds up, with something chewing the root since the first day.

The Norse didn't believe the world was made and finished. They believed it was made out of a crime. Everything that happens later in the mythology is the payment.

A Fly Ruined Thor's Hammer.

Mjolnir was supposed to be perfect. It came out of the fire half a second too early, and that is why the most famous weapon in mythology has a handle too short for two hands.

It started with a haircut. Loki shaved the golden hair off Sif, Thor's wife, purely to see her reaction. With Thor about to break every bone in his body, Loki promised replacement hair made of living gold - forged by the dwarves. The problem: he had nothing to pay them with. So he invented a contest between two rival dwarf families, played both sides against each other, and bet his own head on the outcome.

Then he realised he might actually lose. So the trickster god turned himself into a fly and flew down into the forge to sabotage the very competition he had created. He failed by half a second and in that half second, Mjolnir was born flawed, Thor got the greatest weapon in the nine realms, and Loki got his mouth sewn shut with an awl.

This is the full Norse myth of how Thor's hammer was made: the sons of Ivaldi, Brokk and Eitri, the six treasures of the gods, Gungnir, Skidbladnir, Draupnir, Gullinbursti - and the loophole that saved Loki's head but cost him his lips.

Loki Wasn't the Villain. The Gods Made Him One.

You know Loki as Thor's brother, the charming Marvel villain. The real Norse myth is nothing like that. Loki wasn't Thor's brother.

He wasn't even a god. He was a giant who gave birth to a horse, fathered the wolf that ate Odin, and helped end the world after the gods punished his children for crimes they hadn't committed yet.

This is the complete story of the real Loki: the blood oath with Odin, the wall and the horse, his monstrous children, the murder of Baldur, the punishment that created earthquakes, and Ragnarök, led by the family Asgard destroyed

The Biggest Animated Film Ever Cut Out the Worst Part

Ne Zha 2 is the highest-grossing animated film ever made - and over 99% of that money came from a single country. Most of the world has never seen it, and almost nobody outside China knows the story it comes from.

The original is four hundred years older and considerably darker.

A boy born after a three-and-a-half-year pregnancy, cut out of a ball of flesh by his own father's sword. A seven-year-old who kills a dragon prince and pulls the tendon out of his spine to make his father a belt. Four Dragon Kings who threaten to drown an entire city unless the boy is handed over.

And a child who solves it by giving his body back - his flesh to his mother, his bones to his father - in public, until nothing of him remains.

🔥 Attack on Titan’s Hidden Norse Mythology?! 😱⚔️

Hajime Isayama is an absolute genius, but he did not build the walls of Paradis out of thin air. Attack on Titan is heavily inspired by ancient Norse mythology. The parallels are absolutely mind blowing.

The first Titan, Ymir Fritz, is named directly after Ymir, the primordial giant of Norse myth. Just as the Norse gods used Ymirs body to build a wall protecting humanity from other giants, the people of Paradis live inside walls made from the bodies of Titans.

Even the Coordinate, which connects the Nine Titans through space and time, is a direct representation of Yggdrasil, the cosmic world tree that links the nine realms of existence.
