FUNNEL-LIKE CLOUD LURKS OVER NORTHERN COLUMBUS Sunday evening (Photo used with permission from Brady Harris)--

As moisture was increasing on Sunday and thunderstorms began to bubble up in central Ohio, this image was captured near Hwy 23 and E. Orange Road at around 5pm. While ominous looking, this SCUD cloud looked scarier than it actually was.

So, what was going on here? Scud clouds can sometimes look like funnels because ragged, low-hanging clouds get caught in a thunderstorm's updraft, condensing moisture from the humid air. The humid air condenses and forms vertical, cloud-like shapes as it's lifted and cools, giving the appearance of appendages or tentacles hanging from the storm. The key difference is that scud clouds don't have the organized, persistent rotation of a true funnel cloud, which is a rotating column of air. Thus, this particular cloud was not dangerous.

However, we DID have tornado warnings Monday evening in parts of southern Ohio in parts of Brown, Scioto, Adams, Highland and Pike Counties. As of this post, we had not heard of any touchdowns or significant damage. However, there were reports of some trees down along the path of these storms. If you have photos of funnels or of any damage from Monday evening's storms, please share them in the comments or send me a direct message with the photo. Please be sure to include the location and estimated time.
