Via … New Jersey’s oldest school building, the 179-year-old State Street School in Newark, may soon become a museum dedicated to Black history.

The building, once a school for Black students and home to Newark’s first Black principal, has been purchased by the Hanini Group and reclaimed by the Newark Public Schools district.

The redevelopment will include a $4.5 million investment to transform the site into the Newark Public Schools Museum, though some have raised concerns about the project’s cost and impact on local education.
