Essa Mbye Faal, the lead counsel of the Truth, Reconciliation, and Reparations Commission (TRRC) and leader of the APP Sobeyaa political party, has accused President Adama Barrow’s government of mishandling the controversy surrounding former President Yahya Jammeh’s declared intention to return to The Gambia.

In an interview on Bitilo with journalist Nfally Fadera, Mr. Faal declined to state whether Mr. Jammeh should be arrested upon his return, saying that such a decision rests solely with the government.

“I do not want to offer a personal opinion because it would be unfair. I am not in power; it is them in power. It is they who have asked the Gambian people that they can manage things. Clearly, they are not handling the matter properly,” Mr. Faal said.

Mr. Faal said the government’s response to Mr. Jammeh’s pronouncements has been marked by confusion and political calculation rather than clear policy. He accused the Barrow administration of “playing political football with the future of the country and its peace and security.”

According to Mr. Faal, President Barrow’s primary concern is securing re-election rather than maintaining principled governance. “And that is why they have that alliance with APRC,” he said, referring to Mr. Jammeh’s former ruling party. “That is the body they previously viewed as toxic, and when they entered into that alliance, they became their best bedfellows.”

He noted that the Alliance for Patriotic Reorientation and Construction (APRC) now holds significant influence within the Barrow administration, including the positions of Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly.

Mr. Faal argued that President Barrow has demonstrated a willingness to align with any political group that guarantees electoral victory, regardless of moral or democratic considerations. “So Barrow would go to bed with any of these groups that assured him of victory without regard to any values that one would think one should consider in making these decisions,” he said.

The former TRRC counsel concluded by criticizing the government’s broader record, saying it has failed Gambians on multiple fronts. “They have sunk our economy to the lowest debt;” he said. “It is about time. Enough is enough.“

Talib Ahmed Bensouda, mayor of Kanifing Municipal Council, has ruled out returning to the United Democratic Party (UDP), even if offered the party’s flagbearer position for the 2026 presidential elections. Speaking in an interview with Deutsche Welle, Mr. Bensouda said his decision to leave the UDP stems from differences in political vision, not personal ambition.

“With the UDP, I believe there are possibilities for partnerships. Like I said, this is not an issue of self-interest or me personally wanting to be president; it is an issue of a different belief I have about how democratic entities should be run,” he said.

Mr. Bensouda explained that his new political movement is rooted in a desire to prioritize issue-based politics and national development over personality-driven campaigns.

“This decision is not personal at all; it is just a difference in views. One thing I want to divorce myself from is personality politics, and that’s something that is done a lot in Gambia. You seldom hear politicians talking about issues; they spend all their time up to the point of elections talking about each other, so this movement is different,” he said.

He emphasized that the initiative is not intended to undermine the UDP. “I think there is a lot of propaganda about this movement; it is not an anti-UDP movement. I have actually sat with many UDP figures and told them I don’t want anybody to leave UDP, thinking that there is some opportunity here for your self-interest. I am certainly not encouraging anybody to leave any party. I’m saying if you believe in this movement, wherever you are from, whoever you are, you are more than welcome,” he said.

The mayor said the new platform will focus on transparency, accountability, and national development.

“We are not opposed to individuals; we are opposed to poverty, corruption, and backwardness. What we want is a genuine transformation in The Gambia. We would like to work with everybody as far as it is aligned with our principles and values and our vision for the country,” he said.

Ousainu Darboe, leader and flag-bearer of the United Democratic Party (UDP), has called on President Adama Barrow’s advisers to counsel the president to refrain from making him the focus of his public remarks.

“Ousainu Darboe is not the problem of The Gambia. Ousainu Darboe should not be your agenda,” Mr. Darboe said in a recent interview with Eye Africa TV.

The veteran opposition leader said the president should instead focus on the country’s pressing challenges, particularly those in the agricultural sector, which he described as vital to national development.

Mr. Darboe criticized what he called the president’s “petty talk” during public gatherings, saying it was unbecoming of a head of state. “We are competing in ideas, not in crowd size,” he said, urging Mr. Barrow to deliver speeches that inspire young Gambians, especially those of voting age.

Despite his criticisms, Mr. Darboe expressed gratitude to President Barrow for appointing him as vice president and foreign minister following the 2016 election that ended Yahya Jammeh’s two-decade rule.

“He had faith in me, and I do not think I broke that faith,” Mr. Darboe said. “If I had, you would have heard them saying something else about me—not this nonsense ‘Bantaba’ talk.”

The UDP leader went on to remind Mr. Barrow that his rise to the presidency was made possible through the support of the UDP and its members.

“We refined him, made him, and gave him to the people,” Mr. Darboe said. “During the campaign, he was only wearing yellow until people started protesting that he should stop.”

He added pointedly, “If they are calling him President Adama Barrow, commander in chief of the Gambia Armed Forces, it is because of the UDP and Ousainu Darboe. Even his wife should advise him on this.”

Five Members of 'APRC No To Alliance' Arrested and Detained for Tying APRC Flags

By Kexx News

Five members of the "APRC No To Alliance" faction of the Alliance for Patriotic Reorientation and Construction (APRC) party have been arrested and detained at the Bundung Police Station since Friday.

The arrests occurred after some members took to the streets to tie APRC flags to street poles. Kexx News visited the Bundung Police Station to gather information regarding the arrests.
Speaking to Babucarr Kujabi, who was among the people tying the flags, he explained that while tying the flags one ASP Alieu Jallow and three officers arrived in a police vehicle, GPF patrol 15.

Kujabi further explained that ASP Jallow asked for their ring leaders. He replied that they were Alhagie Sanneh and Edu Mendy. ASP Jallow then told them that they were instructed by the OC of Bundung Police Station that there were APRC members tying flags in the street and that they needed three leaders of the group for questioning and ASP Jallow left with Alhagie Sanneh, Edu Mendy, Sainey Sanneh, Ismaila Kujubi, and Ebrima Sanneh.

Babucarr Kujabi further stated that, according to Alhagie Sanneh's narration, upon their arrival at the police station, they were asked whether they had a permit to tie the flags. Alhagie Sanneh responded that they did not know a permit was required to tie flags. He was then asked who authorised them to tie the flags, and he responded that the youth had gathered themselves to do so following the announcement by former President Yahya Jammeh of his intention to return to the country after an eight-year absence, to welcome him.

At the police station, there was a visible display of solidarity as other members spent the night outside the Bundung Police Station under a shop veranda opposite the station, describing it as solidarity for their detained comrades, and the numbers continuously kept increasing in the morning.

Attempts to gather information from the Bundung Police Station regarding the reasons for the arrests were unsuccessful. The medium was directed to the police headquarters in Banjul for any official statement or information.

The police spokesperson (PRO) was contacted for official communication regarding the arrest. His response was that he also got the information from social media and had forwarded it to the authorities, but he had yet to receive a response. He promised to get back to this medium upon gathering information surrounding the arrests.

At 13:35, Hon. Gibba of Foni Kansala arrived. He entered the police station and was ushered into an office. After engaging in a discussion with officers, he spoke to me. Hon. Gibba revealed he had reached out to the Deputy IGP and the security adviser and stated that the five detainees will be granted bail.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available from official police sources or as bail issues progress.
