Paella is one of the most traditional of Spanish dishes. “Paella” means “frying pan” in the Catalan and Valencian languages. This originates from the community called Valencia. Three common types: paella de mariscos (seafood), paella mixta (mixed with seafood and meat) and paella valeciana (including rabbit, chicken, duck and snails). Rice seasoned with saffron serves as a base. Delicious.

Check out this “chiringuito” at Platja de Sant Simo in Mataro, Catalunya Spain about 35 miles north of Barcelona. A “chiringuito” is a temporary beach bar that sells drinks —including alcoholic ones— and tapas. Sometimes a permanent structure is not possible to build. However, being beachfront, chiringuitos can demand a somewhat higher price without a high overhead, making them profitable and providing a relaxing way for locals and tourists to enjoy a drink or some tapas at the “platja” (Catalan)/ “playa” (Spanish)

In Catalonia, the Festa de Sant Joan (the Feast Day of Saint John) is a major holiday observed on June 24th. Celebrations begin on the night of June 23rd. The holiday commemorates the birth of Saint John and coincides with the summer solstice. Catalans light “petardos” (small firecrackers) and make bonfires. The fire is thought to scare away evil. They also like eat dinner together outside. The star dessert is the “Coca de Sant Joan” (pictured here) which is made with brioche. It is decorated with candied fruit, pine nuts and sugar. It is typically accompanied with cava!

Universitat de Barcelona was established in 1450, more than 575 years ago.

Walking by brought back memories of me as a young twenty-something in Barcelona taking Spanish classes there and going across the street after class to Bar Estudiantil with classmates to “tomar un cafecito con leche” and practice whatever Spanish structure formed part of the day’s lesson.

While in Barcelona, I also learned quite a bit of Catalan and though I rarely speak Catalan, I still understand a lot and can speak a bit as well.

I was also working at the time as an English teacher and felt a bit overwhelmed by the experience. I never regretted it and the experience bolstered my language skills, gave me more of an international perspective on the world and helped me develop coping skills.

I also made some wonderful friends.
