The historic Cathedral House, a former rectory on the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) campus that served as the stage for the 1967 National Black Power Conference, will be demolished despite strong public concern that this move will gradually chip away at historic preservation in Newark.

The Newark Landmarks and Historic Preservation Commission ultimately approved NJPAC’s demolition plans on Wednesday night in a 5-2 vote, with three abstentions.
