I wanted to give you guys a Millie update. For the past few days, Millie has been stuffing her face into a corner and completely avoiding eye contact or coming out of her kennel. This morning, I heard her bump into the closet door, so I knew she was brave enough for the first time to come out on her own. When I walked over, she was sitting up, and when I gently put my hand in, she gave me a small lick. She also licked me back at the shelter after my third day visiting her, so I really think this is a sign that she’s slowly wanting to open up. The only other time she’s come out was to use the bathroom on the potty pads we set up directly outside of her kennel and then she ran right back in. ☹️ Millie is probably one of the most shut down fosters I’ve had in a long time. I wish I could do more to help her understand she’s safe now, but for now we’ll keep giving her time and letting her observe us and our other dogs until she feels brave enough to come out and explore on her own.

Fostering a puppy looks a lot different than fostering adult dogs. The energy is higher, the needs are bigger, and some days that foster mom guilt creeps in wondering if I’m doing enough, moving fast enough, or getting everything right for her.
