During the most recent Newberry County Council meeting, Tommy Long, Newberry County Emergency Services director, recognized the Bush River Fire-Rescue Department, as part of a new tradition Newberry County Council has initiated to recognize the volunteer departments!

Bush River Fire Rescue has three stations in the upper portion of Newberry County. The main station is the Bush River station. The two substations are Belfast Station and Counts Station.

During his presentation, Mr. Long recognized the department for the great job they do. He noted the department responded to 182 calls in 2024 and has responded to 120 calls so far this year. Several of those calls have been to incidents on I-26. He noted that department members hold a variety of certifications, with years of service ranging from less than one year to 40 years.

Newberry County Council thanked the volunteers for their dedication, noting that they are the backbone of Newberry County.

Pictured are a few of the volunteers with Bush River Fire-Rescue Department, they are also standing with Chairman Robert Shealy, Emergency Services Director Tommy Long, Emergency Services Coordinator Brandon Wicker, and County Administrator Jeff Shacker.

Edit to update:
From Jessica Clamp: I would like to say a few things n thanks to all who helped rescue the snake from the wild, Warren Gallman & family thank u! & thank u for allowing us at the serpentarium to take possession & care of this beautiful animal! I have seen the wishes of leaving the name & i will concede to yes the name can stay "Nanners"! I have a great deal of roots n your county from spending such wonderful youth years as a college student at Newberry! We will care for Nanners as we do all our reptiles & in due time he will be on display! Thank u so much for all the kind wishes for this phenomenal reptile!

Orginial post:
We would like to announce that we did in fact take in the python that was found in Newberry aka “Nanners”. He arrived on Thursday by transport. From our understanding he may have been in the wild for quite a bit of time as we were told he was first spotted August 1. With that being said he are treating him for parasites, monitoring and accessing his health for a few weeks. We then will hope to start working on an enclosure for him so that he can be introduced to the public within our facility. We have had a few people asking about sending donations to support him here. We are working on a list and will have one up to the public next week as we needed to see if there were any immediate needs first. We hope that he will be a great addition to our family of reptiles here in the park. (FYI. He will probably receive a new name soon. We feel like he needs a fresh start.)

Wilfrido George Luna, 45, of West Columbia, has been identified as the person arrested for a Monday morning murder on I 26 at Exit 82W (Prosperity). Luna shot a female, which has not been identified, and fled across both lanes of I 26 toward the Mid Carolina Country Club. Deputy Sheriffs, Probation, Parole and Pardon Agents, and Newberry City Police Officers located Luna in the parking lot of the Mid Carolina Country Club and were able to take him into custody after a brief stand off. SLED forensic agents were called in to assist in the crime scene investigation and SC Highway Patrol and Transport Police closed off the exit ramp. Newberry County Sheriff's Deputies are working to determine the causes of the shooting. The Newberry County Coroner's Office will provide the name of the victim once identification has been made. Because of the proximity of the campuses of Mid Carolina schools and the suspect was armed and dangerous, a lock down took place. The lock down lasted less than 30 minutes. Sheriff Lee Foster complimented the work of law enforcement to quickly arrest Luna, who was armed, before any more harm could be done. Sheriff Foster also complimented several civilians that witnessed the situation. This was an isolated incident and the public is no longer in danger. Luna is in the Newberry County Detention Center. Murder charges require an appearance before a Circuit Court Judge for bonding.
