A safety update from The City of Newberry, SC Government ahead of the 4th of July:

Newberry Police Department, Newberry Fire Department and Newberry County EMS responded to a call Tuesday of an arm injury involving fireworks shortly after 4 p.m.

Upon arrival, first responders found a subject in the yard with major trauma as well as a shed on fire behind the home with small explosions still occurring.

Fire Chief Gene Shealy said the fire department was able to begin fire suppression and exposure protection from a distance and assisted the police department and EMS with patient care.

The fire was fully extinguished quickly, Shealy said, with the scene being cleared around 10:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The subject with major trauma was transported by EMS to a nearby trauma center. Two other patients were transported with non-life-threatening injuries.

Other units assisting on scene included City of Newberry utilities, the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office, Newberry County Rescue Squad, Alcohol To***co and Fi****ms (ATF) and the South Carolina State Fire Marshal’s Office.

The Newberry Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division is assisting ATF and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) in this investigation.

Police Chief Kevin Goodman said the Newberry Police Department is praying for all of the families of these young people that were injured.

“It’s the Fourth of July holiday week and I ask that everyone please be careful with fireworks,” Goodman said. “Use them as they are packaged and do not try to modify them.”
