Born into slavery on this day in 1856, Booker T. Washington is one of the most influential Black Americans of all time. Among his notable accomplishments are founding Tuskegee University and the National Negro Business League, authoring several books, and advising Presidents Theodore Roosevelt and William Howard Taft. Washington’s speech, known as the "Atlanta Compromise," brought him national fame; in it, he called for Black progress through education and entrepreneurship rather than directly challenging Jim Crow segregation and the disenfranchisement of Black voters in the South. Although controversial at the time, Booker T. Washington accomplished a great deal during a turbulent time and is widely regarded as a leading American thinker.

Today, on April 4, we celebrate the birthday of the phenomenal woman, Maya Angelou (1928-2014). Watch her performance of Still I Rise to witness the joy, the triumph, the glory – of the actress, author, poet, dancer, feminist, and civil rights activist who captured the heart of the world. In 1993 she was the second poet in history invited to a U.S. Presidential Inauguration where she read On the Pulse of Morning. Her first book, "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" is celebrated for creating a new literary expression of the American memoir. We are forever indebted to Maya for sharing with us her profound wisdom, heart, and singular perspective.

04/01/2022

National Arab American Heritage Month (NAAHM) celebrates the history, culture, and contributions of the 3.7 million Americans with roots in one of the world’s 22 Arab nations. NAAHM was officially recognized by President Biden and the US State Department in 2021 in response to a grassroots initiative launched in 2017 by the Arab American Foundation and following a Congressional resolution issued in 2019 by Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-MI) and Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI).

At Corwin, this month serves as a reminder of our commitment to recognizing and affirming the diverse experiences, cultures, and home languages of our Arab American educators and students. To learn more about NAAHM and explore educational resources, visit the Arab America Foundation. http://ow.ly/Tlsz50IxE3g

The process the brain uses to read changes as we age. Perhaps reading is the most crucial academic skill primary school students should master because if reading lags, the brain begins to produce alternative pathways to compensate for the brain regions not performing efficiently. Once the brain develops alternative pathways, it becomes difficult to correct as children age. #ThePovertyProblem Corwin

And speaking of nice people, I had the pleasure of virtually meeting fellow Corwin author Carol Radford last week. Her words and methods definitely lifted my spirits. So naturally I bought her latest book, Teaching with Light: Ten Lessons for Finding Wisdom, Balance, and Inspiration. I can’t wait to dive into this book. 😘Much love Carol. And many thanks to Tori Bachman for arranging the monthly author talks. They have been a blessing.
Giveaway alert! A few weeks ago I was able to interview Dr. Doug Fisher on his book Reading Comprehension: The Skill, Will, and Thrill of reading. This book has some valuable insights and I really wanted to go live and share some of what I learned! (Plus, I've really missed going live!) Join me LIVE on Monday, January 10th at 8:30 p.m. EST/6:30 p.m. MST to talk about some easy ways to improve reading comprehension in your rooms. ALSO, Corwin has agreed to give away copies of his book to 3 people who attend live. ***Remember: Facebook shows the reminder in your own time zone!
One of the ways you can goal-set is make your goals visual and public. This was a “phogoal” (📷photo + 🎯 goal) I set back in 2012( 10 years ago). Sometimes God has other plans for our heart’s desires. I was’t published in these 3 magazines but five years later I published my first book with Corwin and two years after that Dave Burgess Consulting, Inc. published my second book #creativelyproductive As Social Club Misfits say in their song Testify, “I need same day delivery for some of my prayers” - sometimes God delivers our heart’s desires in ways we never imagined and on His timeline. Keep going. Persevere. Have faith. Trust God!
Hojat found that exercises where students actively listen and then repeat back what is said in their own words increase empathy. The practice of expressing what someone says in your own words primes the brain to see things from another person’s perspective. #ThePovertyProblem #CorwinPress
Corwin just published my article, “21 Communication Skills Every High School Should Have”. The post includes all 21 skills as well as some of the research and career studies I drew from for the book. https://corwin-connect.com/2021/11/21-communication-skills-every-high-school-student-should-have/ Random: I didn’t choose the graphic to go with the post. Kinda cool they selected one that still had a pop of teal in it. 😜
There are a lot of people that make a book a success. The editor is oftentimes the unsung hero of the publishing world and I just wanted to take a moment and share some gratitude for Ariel Curry Ariel Curry Editorial - She was the editor on my first Corwin book, Cultivating Communication in the Classroom. She not only pushed me to be a better writer BUT challenged me every step of the way. Each time I added a suggestion or claim, she pushed back to make sure that I had research to back it up. She made this book a strong future ready resource backed by research AND industry experts and I am forever grateful to her. P.S. She now provides editing and ghostwriting services via her website http://arielcurry.com/ P.P.S. I can’t say enough good things about this woman!
My first book, Cultivating Communication in the Classroom, focused on future-ready skills for students that could be taught throughout the secondary curriculum. Chapter 5 focuses on student portfolios. That chapter is being offered for FREE via this Corwin post, “How to Help Students WOW Future Employers with Portfolios”. The post also includes some of the industry experts’ answers to the question, “What do employers look for in portfolios and resumes?” The answer to that question as well as access to the FREE Corwin chapter can be found by visiting: is.gd/studentportfolioschapter
