October is National Depression Education and Awareness Month—a time to recognize the importance of mental health at every stage of life. Checking on children, adolescents, and young adults' mental health is essential for their safety, relationships, and overall wellbeing, as it plays a crucial role in helping them grow into emotionally healthy adults. To support this effort, mental health professionals now have a valuable new tool: the Emotion Regulation Strategies Questionnaire (FEEL-KJ-2), designed to predict the risk of mental health issues in these individuals during this critical stage of development.

The FEEL-KJ-2 is a self-report questionnaire designed to evaluate how youth ages 9-20 manage their emotions when they are angry, anxious or sad. Validated against the most widely-used and respected psychological measures for anxiety and depression, the results offer insights into the potential risk for the development of serious mental health challenges.

"Testing the Identical Effect on Predicted and Actual Memory Through Pictorial Stimuli" by Miri Besken and Gizem Filiz, is this month's Hogrefe Featured Open Science Article published in Hogrefe's Experimental Psychology journal.

New research shows that people consistently predict better memory for identical pairs (like DOG–DOG) than related ones (like DOG–CAT), even though related pairs are remembered more accurately. This "identical effect" extends to pictures too. Across three experiments, identical image pairs received higher memory judgments, but recall was often no better—or worse—than for related images. This month's Hogrefe Editor Spotlight Article is "Effects of Task Switching on Depletion, Motivation, and Creativity: Examining the Nature of Tasks" by Christina Nuhn and Sandra Ohly, and featured in the Journal of Personal Psychology.

This study takes a look at how work interruptions are a frequent occurrence during the workday. It looks to sheds light on two crucial yet overlooked aspects of work interruptions: task switching and routinized tasks. By shedding light on task complexity and multitasking preferences, this study contributes to a more balanced examination of the positive and negative aspects of task switching.
