Black Hills Energy closely monitoring electric system during extreme wind event

RAPID CITY, SD, Dec. 17, 2025 – Black Hills Energy is actively monitoring today’s increased risk of wildfire and potential for weather-related outages, due to extreme winds across our South Dakota service territory. The company currently does not plan to initiate an Emergency Public Safey Power Shutoff and is taking action to support the safe operation of the electric system. Black Hills Energy will continue to monitor for changing conditions that may create the need for a safety shutoff throughout this high wind event.

What we’re doing

Closely monitoring weather conditions and leveraging fire weather forecasting tools.
Implementing our operational response plans to postpone, restrict or delay certain work tasks until conditions improve.
Activating enhanced powerline safety settings to reduce risk of ignition in the event tree limbs or debris make contact with powerlines during this high wind event.

How you can prepare

Sign up for alerts and keep your contact information up to date so we can provide safety and outage notifications. Visit blackhillsenergy.com/my-account.
Have a backup plan for medicine that needs to be refrigerated or medical equipment that is powered by electricity. This could mean finding a place to go during an outage or having a backup generator.
Build an emergency kit and plan and share with friends and neighbors.
If you see downed powerlines, stay away and call 911.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A high wind warning means 40 mph winds, or gusts over 60 mph, are
expected or occurring. If you are outdoors, watch for flying or
falling objects.
