Depending on weather and fuel conditions, the fire management staff at Wind Cave National Park plan to ignite a 1,094-acre prescribed fire on Friday, October 24.

The primary objectives of the Lookout Flats Prescribed Fire are to reduce fuel loading, decrease encroachment of young ponderosa pine onto the prairie, and increase cover of native forbs. Prescribed fires help decrease the intensities of future wildfires and mimic the natural fire regimes of a mixed-grass prairie ecosystem.

During the day of the burn, smoke may be heavy at times along Highways 385 and 87 and visible from the surrounding region. Highway 385 between the north and south access roads into park headquarters will be closed with traffic routed through the visitor center parking lot.

The Lookout Point, Highland Creek, and Wind Cave Canyon Trails will be closed during firing operations and longer if necessary. For additional information, visit: https://www.nps.gov/wica/learn/news/09232025pr.htm

55-year-old Newcastle, Wyo., man was killed in a crash Thursday afternoon on U.S. Highway 85, 22 miles north of town.

The biker, John Fowler, reportedly failed to negotiate a curve, lost control and hit a driveway at a high rate of speed. The Wyoming Highway Patrol estimates the bike was going more than 100 mph. The bike, a 2016 Harley-Davidson Fat Boy, then went airborne for about 130 feet before crashing into a tree.

According to investigators, Fowler may have been drinking before the crash. Speed and possible impairment are being looked at as possible causes in this crash.

This fatality brings deaths on Wyoming roadways to 103 on the year. This is compared to 89 in 2024, and 119 in 2023
