Restriping work is underway on the following County roads:

To minimize traffic disruptions, this work will take place at night.

We also want to thank our hardworking crews who cleared away any accumulated sediment and grass to prepare for the new striping. This process is important as it helps to:

✅ Create a clean surface for the new striping
✅ Ensure proper drainage along the road edges
✅ Reduce the risk of standing water and hydroplaning

Coweta County Fire Rescue is responding to a residence in the 80 block of Stapler Rd off W Hwy 16 for a report of a possible structure fire with woods/grass involvement.

UPDATE | So far all the information i've gotten is from parents. I know several ATL media stations are on the way and they've confirmed with me there's been an incident and EMS did transport.

As soon as I can find a reliable news source with more information I'll hare it.

Getting reports of an incident at Langston Hughes High School in Fairburn that has reportedly sent several students to the hospital.

Initial reports, so far unconfirmed, is there was a possible altercation that resulted in a stabbing.

Scotty Elliott Smith, 38, has been booked into the Coweta County Jail and charged with the following regarding the murder of Blake Tyler Chappell.

- MURDER
- AGGRAVATED ASSAULT
- POSSESSION OF FIREARM OR KNIFE DURING COMMISSION OF OR ATTES
- TAMPERING WITH EVIDENCE- FELONY
- CONCEALING DEATH OF ANOTHER

Criminal History

In 2007 Smith was charged with, and indicted on, Fleeing / Att to Evade, hindering law enforcement, and possession of ma*****na less than an ounce.

He entered a negotiated plea on the charges in Superior Court, the counts were dropped to misd and he was given 12 months of probation with a conditional discharge. At the end of the 12 month probation, without any violations, the court followed through with the conditional discharge.

In 2018 he was charged with, and indicted on the following charges.

- AGGRAVATED ASSAULT ON A PEACE OFFICER
- INTERFERENCE WITH GOVERNMENT PROPERTY
- CRIMINAL DAMAGE TO PROPERTY 1ST DEGREE
- CRIMINAL DAMAGE TO PROPERTY 2ND DEGREE
- AGGRESSIVE DRIVING
- HIT AND RUN

While in jail on those charges and awaiting trial he was charged with, and indicted on, the following charges.

- VIOLENCE IN A PENAL INSTITUTION
- VIOLENCE IN A PENAL INSTITUTION
- SIMPLE BATTERY
- SIMPLE BATTERY

In August of 2018 he entered an Alford Plea in both cases which where combined for sentencing.

As a result of the plea he plead guilty to

- INTERFERENCE WITH GOVERNMENT PROPERTY
- CRIMINAL DAMAGE TO PROPERTY 1ST DEGREE
- CRIMINAL DAMAGE TO PROPERTY 2ND DEGREE
- HIT AND RUN
- VIOLENCE IN A PENAL INSTITUTION
- SIMPLE BATTERY

The remaining charges where either dropped or merged with like charges.

His sentence for the above was 15 years, with 5 years to serve in prison.

GA DoC records show that Smith was incarcerated at the Jenkins Correctional Facility in East GA between the following dates.

INCARCERATION BEGIN: 08/14/2018
INCARCERATION END: 07/08/2020
