Maj. Pete Merrill doesn’t spend much time trying to define what his service in Iraq and Afghanistan meant.

For him, the story is simple: It was an honor to serve.

“I don’t care what Iraq was or wasn’t,” Merrill told students gathered for East Coweta High School’s Veterans Day program Tuesday morning. “They were some of the most important times of my life, and I wouldn’t trade them for anything.”

Merrill, a 20-year Marine Corps infantry officer and current Marine JROTC instructor at East Coweta, was the event’s featured speaker.

The East Coweta girls basketball team enters the 2025-26 regular season with high hopes that the program will take another step forward toward becoming a perennial contender in AAAAAA Region 2.

The Lady Indians posted a 13-13 record last winter and went 4-4 in Region 2 play. That record was good for third place in the region and a bid to the AAAAAA state playoffs. However, their season ended in the first round of the postseason with a 55-41 loss to Mill Creek.

Lady Indians head coach Quacy Timmons feels the improvement shown last season in making the playoffs can continue into this year’s campaign.

“Overall, last year was a pretty good year,” Timmons said. “We got off to kind of a slow start because we had some multi-sport kids, which is kind of the way of the world right now. Once we got going, we got going. We looked at it like, the year before (2023-24 season) we won three. Last year we won 13. We did a lot of things we’ve never done before in our history, like beat Westlake. I’m hoping this year we can contend with everybody.”

Just a few residents attended a public meeting Tuesday to learn about a proposed roundabout at Jefferson Street, Greison Trail and a realigned Sprayberry Road in Newnan.

Bill Albrecht was one of those in favor of the project. In general, he supports roundabouts.

“I think that roundabouts are the safest intersection you could possibly have,” Albrecht said.

Three companies with loans tied to the failed First Liberty Building & Loan are asking a federal judge to block the court-appointed receiver from collecting debts they say are based on invalid loan provisions.

In a 35-page motion filed Nov. 10 in U.S. District Court, Riverdawg LLC, No Free LLC and Holt K**b Holdings LLC, entities owned by Dr. Jerry Williams, argue that their loans with First Liberty and related companies should be treated separately, not as one combined obligation.

The filing asks Judge Michael L. Brown to declare the “cross-collateralization” and “cross-default” clauses in the loan agreements invalid, claiming that the receiver’s position, which links all debts, is preventing them from refinancing or paying off individual loans.

Reinaldo Jesus, 74, stood outside the One Roof Outreach offices waiting for them to open on Monday.

Bundled in a sweatshirt hoodie and pants, he braved the cold, hoping to get some food after his Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits were interrupted by the government shutdown.

He said he’s been resorting to dumpster diving at grocery stores for food.

“Believe it or not, I find good stuff,” Jesus said.

The Budd family directed funds given in honor of their son, Andrew Bryant Budd, to the clinic, which is using the money to provide counseling for patients through a Choosing Him Ministries counselor.

As revolution consumed Iran in early 1979 and the Shah’s government collapsed, a young U.S. Air Force captain from Alabama found himself at the controls of a mission where one wrong decision could have cost hundreds of lives.

On Thursday, Nov. 6, retired Lt. Col. Will Noe, now of Coweta County, recounted for the White Oak Golden Kiwanis his role in evacuating Americans from Tehran as the Iranian Revolution erupted around them.

Noe served as aircraft commander of a C-141 Starlifter during the evacuation, and his account left listeners gripping their seats as if flying with him into danger.
