For many students at East Coweta High School, the band room is more than a place to rehearse. It’s a place to belong, and a place to be pushed.

That balance between high expectations and genuine support has defined the East Coweta band program for decades, and it is paying off both on the field and far beyond it.

During the fall marching season, the band captured Grand Champion honors at both Whitewater and Harris County high schools and advanced as a finalist at the Buford High School Georgia Marching Band Collective Championships.

Twenty-five students earned spots in the Georgia Music Educators Association All-District Honor Band, with four earning first-chair honors.

But for band director Robert Owens, success has never been measured solely by trophies.

“Our mission is to give kids a place where they feel supported and comfortable, but also expected to pursue excellence,” Owens said. “They need to know it’s OK to fail as long as they’re pushing themselves and learning from it.”

Members of the Attainable Housing Task Force spent much of the first meeting of the year on Tuesday talking about their plans for 2026.

Claudia Cieslar, of the Home Builders Association of Midwest Georgia, said the association has been working on creating house plans for homes under $300,000.

“Our goal is to propose these pre-approved plans to the counties and municipalities,” Cieslar said. “They’d have certain lots available and a certain amount of time to be able to have the consumer pick them up.”

Andrew Moody, special projects manager for the city of Newnan, is also spending a good deal of time working on the dearth of affordable housing in the city.

“We are ready to go; that’s going to be the motto for 2026,” Moody said. “We have finally finished all the hurdles that we needed to get through and have all of our solicitation with resounding response.”

Mellow Mushroom, the Atlanta-based pizza chain known for its stone-baked pies and colorful, eclectic atmosphere, will open a new location in Newnan in 2026.

The restaurant will feature the company’s new “Fast-Fine” prototype, a fully counter-service model designed to speed up ordering and streamline service.

It will be only the second of its kind, following the first prototype location that opened in Atlanta’s Grant Park neighborhood in 2024.

The new format includes menu additions like frozen beverages, catering options and quicker lunch service, and has performed well in its first full year, according to the company.

A portion of Morena Street near Meharry Medical College in North Nashville will receive the honorary street designation of Dr. Harold W. Jordan Way after well-known psychiatrist and Tennessee’s first Black commissioner of mental health.

Dr. Harold W. Jordan, a Meharry Medical College graduate as was his grandfather Newnan resident Dr. John Henry Jordan, was a longtime chair of its department of psychiatry and interim dean at Meharry’s School of Medicine.

The Nashville Metro Council approved the ordinance at a December meeting. The sponsors of the change were Councilmembers Brandon Taylor, Sandy Ewing, Jacob Kupin, Zulfat Suara, Joy Styles, Tasha Ellis, Terry Vo, Kyonzte Toombs, Delisha Porterfield and Jennifer Gamble.

Born in Newnan, Jordan graduated from Morehouse College before matriculating at Meharry, from which he graduated in 1962. He also completed one year of a residency in internal medicine at Meharry. In 1964, a day before the Civil Rights Act was signed, Jordan became the first Black resident at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
