Beyond the Bitter Sea, by J. G. Knott, Dockside Sailing Press, May 2014
Jerry Knott’s new novel has been released in paperback and e-book formats. It should be noted that by trade, Jerry is a plumber. Those who know him in this capacity are always surprised: “What? My plumber wrote a 500 page novel about Babylonia in the sixth century B.C?”
The facts of the matter are that early in his career Jerry owned and operated a plumbing contracting business in Roseburg, Oregon. In 1976 he moved out of the country to work for Saudi Arabian Airlines as a section manager of facilities maintenance at the new international airport in Jeddah. Jerry lived in Saudi Arabia for a decade. While in the Middle East, he traveled extensively in the region and spent a dozen years researching the history of ancient cultures in Persia, Iraq, India, and Sri Lanka. During his travels, the idea for the novel gradually took shape in his mind. Gil, the protagonist in the story, was a merchant seaman who traveled 2,500 years earlier to some of the same places Jerry visited. You’ll like reading about Gil, his family, and the rich collection of rogues, beautiful women, and scoundrels that he encounters in is travels.
Beyond the Bitter Sea is a great read highly recommended “as these readers note:
• J. G. Knott has written an ambitious novel. An epic adventure story with characters we learn to care deeply about.

• I've read too many accounts of our "pioneer" ancestors, and when I think of our forefather and mothers, I somehow picture in my mind "the cavemen"….but what about the ones that enabled humanity to still exist despite the difficult conditions of 500 BC!!!! This book will make you feel like you were there tying down masts, fighting with swords, actually growing food or starve, traveling extremely long distances to rescue a loved one, not to mention the intricacies of what a love life was like in those days…so many of the political aspects seem like they are mimicking the ones of today, and even the weather of today (typhoon, tsunami). Characters like the ones in "Beyond the Bitter Sea" are truly the ones we should thank. If it wasn't for their tenacity of mind and spirit, this race as we know it would not exist. You will receive an education while being entertained….but, be forewarned….the food descriptions will make you head to the kitchen for something like a nice bowl of Lentil soup…..and also be warned that if you read this in bed, you will stay up so late that your neck will hurt in the morning. I guess not being able to put a book down is a compliment to the chef, oh I mean author!

• I enjoyed reading Beyond the Bitter Sea. The author intertwines our moral issues today that started in 563 BC. The love of life and family reverberated throughout the story. This is a book I will pass on to family and friends.
