THE MAN IN THE APARTMENT NEXT DOOR
EPISODE 1 — THE NEW NEIGHBOR
Claire Morgan had spent the last six months trying to rebuild a life she no longer recognized.
At twenty-nine, she never imagined that her marriage would end so suddenly. The divorce had left her emotionally exhausted, but she refused to allow it to destroy her.
So Claire made a decision.
She left everything behind and moved to New York City.
She rented a beautiful apartment in an upscale Manhattan building, hoping that the city would give her the fresh start she desperately needed.
On the afternoon she arrived, Claire stood inside her new apartment, looking through the enormous windows at the Manhattan skyline.
For the first time in months, she smiled.
“Maybe this is exactly what I need,” she whispered.
She wiped a tear from her cheek and looked around the empty apartment.
“No more looking backward. I'm starting over.”
After unpacking a few things, Claire stepped into the hallway to take some boxes downstairs.
As she struggled with one particularly heavy box, a man's voice suddenly came from behind her.
“Do you need some help?”
Claire turned around.
A tall, handsome man stood outside the apartment next door.
He was dressed in a crisp white shirt with the sleeves rolled slightly above his wrists and black trousers. His expression was calm, almost unreadable.
Claire smiled politely.
“I've got it. Thank you.”
The man looked at the box.
“You've been fighting with that box for the last two minutes.”
Claire laughed.
“Okay, maybe I need a little help.”
He walked over, lifted the box effortlessly and carried it toward her apartment.
“I'm Ethan,” he said.
“Claire.”
“Nice to meet you, Claire.”
“You live here?”
Ethan pointed toward the apartment beside hers.
“Right next door.”
Claire nodded.
“Well, I guess we're neighbors.”
“Yes,” Ethan replied. “We are.”
There was something about the way he looked at her that made Claire slightly uncomfortable.
Not because he was rude.
Quite the opposite.
He was too calm.
Almost as if he already knew something about her.
Claire studied his face.
“Have we met before?”
Ethan paused.
“No.”
Then he smiled faintly.
“I don't think so.”
Claire nodded slowly.
“Okay.”
Ethan placed the box inside her apartment.
“If you need anything, knock on my door.”
“Thank you.”
He turned to leave.
But before he reached his apartment, Claire called after him.
“Ethan?”
He stopped.
“Yes?”
“Thanks again.”
“You're welcome.”
He walked into his apartment and closed the door.
Claire stood there for a moment.
Something about him bothered her.
She couldn't explain what it was.
That evening, Claire took a shower and changed into her burgundy nightgown.
She was exhausted from the move, so she decided to get some fresh air before going to bed.
She walked toward the glass doors overlooking the city.
As she pulled the curtain slightly open, she noticed Ethan standing outside on the balcony of his apartment.
He wasn't on his phone.
He wasn't drinking.
He wasn't doing anything ordinary.
He was holding something in his hands.
Claire leaned closer.
A necklace.
Her eyes widened.
She stared at it.
There was something strangely familiar about the pendant.
Very familiar.
Claire's heart began beating faster.
“No…”
She pressed one hand against the glass.
“That can't be.”
Ethan turned the necklace over in his fingers.
Claire's eyes remained fixed on it.
She had seen that necklace before.
Not recently.
Not in New York.
She had seen it in an old photograph.
A photograph of her mother.
Elena Morgan.
The woman Claire had been told died eighteen years ago.
Claire stepped backward in shock.
Her voice trembled.
“Why does Ethan have my mother's necklace?”
Outside, Ethan suddenly looked toward the glass door.
Claire froze.
Their eyes met.
For a few seconds, neither of them moved.
Then Ethan slowly closed his hand around the necklace.
Claire's heart raced.
She quickly stepped away from the window.
But one question refused to leave her mind.
How could the man living next door have a necklace that belonged to her missing mother?
And Claire had no idea that the answer would change everything she believed about her family.
