Today is the first day of my favorite month. I have always believed that words can change the world. It can happen with a news story that, simply because of its publication, saves lives. It can be through a book that makes a child, surrounded by darkness, dream dreams beyond circumstance. And it can be through a poem that inspires that same child to see the light in this life. According to poet Rita Dove, “Poetry is language at its most distilled and most powerful.” As you consider how you spend this Spring, consider reading a poem or two because as author Alice Walker said, “Poetry is the lifeblood of rebellion, revolution, and the raising of consciousness.”
