They drank torpedo fuel to survive the boredom of war. During World War II, U.S. Navy sailors created one of the most dangerous cocktails in military history. Desperate for alcohol in the middle of the Pacific, they turned to the only source available: the 180-proof ethyl alcohol used to power torpedoes.
