Few foods are as closely linked to Newport summers as the lobster roll. The iconic seafood sandwich appears everywhere, from waterfront takeout windows and food trucks to upscale harbor restaurants. And don’t forget the original Easton’s Beach twin rolls now at Salty’s at Second Beach, where they have revived their much-sought-after seaside sandwich.

Get the low-down on this summer staple, a taste of Luke’s Lobster with a walk-up window on Bowen's Wharf, and tips and a recipe for making lobster rolls at home.

Newport Charter Yacht Show, June 22 to 25, allows industry professionals to peruse about a dozen boats in the show ranging in size from 92 to 180 feet. For Newport, the economic impact is significant, with yachts operating here from May to October. Besides the crew spending money on their down time off the boat there are docking fees of up to $17 per foot or higher per day, plus electricity and water fees.

Beyond the commercial benefits the charter yacht business brings to Newport, many owners believe in giving back for a good cause. Several of the yachts in the charter show remain in port and help host the Newport Yacht Rendezvous benefiting the Boys and Girls Clubs of Newport County who this year presented the Lifetime Achievement Award to charter broker Jennifer Saia . This year’s event is June 26 at the Safe Harbor Newport Shipyard.

Nearly 100 residents gathered on June 3 in the Middletown High School cafeteria to give input to the Middletown Council on the proposed amendments to the zoning code regarding the development of the Middletown Town Commons. Offered a chance to officially address the council, dozens objected to commercial development of any kind on the West Main Road/Coddington property. The next public hearing will be held on Tuesday, July 14, at 6 p.m., at the Gaudet School cafeteria. The council will hear further public comment and will then take action on the proposed Zoning Code and Comprehensive Plan amendments. “Assuming that they are prepared to do so at that time,” Town Solicitor Peter Reagan said.

The Tuckerman coastal right-of-way has been restored close to its original dimensions following the building of a new home foundation at an abutting property. Meanwhile, local Boy Scout, Harry Jasinski, will be doing an erosion management project at another right-of-way for his Eagle Scout project. The right- of-way, known locally as either Pebble Beach, Peckham Beach and Kingfisher Avenue will include “rolling grade dips” to manage the flow of surface water runoff as part of the project.
