MIDDLETOWN -- When I first spoke with Coddington's new brewer Josh Schilling in July, he had recently come here from Tennessee and told me he was eager to try the rising New England IPA style. His interpretation came out just over a week ago and it's very enjoyable.
Coddington New England IPA has a hazy orange-copper color and a full mouthfeel. Some others, like Lord Hobo's Glorious and Newport Storm's Rhode Trip, keep the malt body lighter to better showcase the hops. On the other hand, Coddington's is well balanced with an underlying biscuit-mix malt palate that I find characteristic of many of its beers.
The fruit flavors of the style are there, too: I'll guess tangerine, apricot, mango and a hint of pineapple. The fruitiness is not without a slight bitter smack, like orange rind, at the end.
Well done, Josh.

Got my first taste of Newport Storm Beer's Rhode Trip New England IPA today at Bellevue Wine & Spirits, served by Storm's own Theresa Malafronte. Of course I had to take home two four-packs to give it a proper evaluation. Two cans in now, and I'm going to say it's a good one -- tropical-fruity in the new IPA style. I'll have more on this and many other new Rhode Island beers in the next Beer Chaser, July 1 in The Newport Daily News. (Photo courtesy Newport Storm)

Nabbed these babies at Tilted Barn Brewery in Exeter today. All I had to do was drive 18 miles, get there before the opening, wait in line for an hour and pay $42.50. Worth it? I'll find out when I drink 'em, but I'm guessing "Yes!"

This is one of my favorites among the many photos Dave Hansen has taken for Beer Chaser. Yes, I did drink and review all these Lagunitas beers, and more. If you missed this weekend's edition of The Newport Daily News, it's still out there, but here's the link to NewportRI.com anyway.
