Here are some key items to review at the next Newton City Council meeting scheduled 6 p.m. Monday, June 15 at City Hall:

• Public hearing to annex county property into the city.
Two property owners northeast of town requested their land be annexed into the city as part the Newton Rail Park project.

• Public hearing to amend city code allowing group living facilities in downtown.
Focuss Inc. has requested a change in the zoning code allowing group living facilities to be a permitted use for the Central Business District.

• Rate increase for city attorney prosecution services.
Brick Gentry P.C. is currently contracted with the city to provide legal services at $150 per hour. The law firm requested an increase to $200 per hour.

• Updated cemetery rules, including removal of late arrival fees.
The city is amending interment hours, banning the spreading of ashes on cemetery grounds and removing a late arrival penalty fee.

• First consideration amend city’s animals code.
Council made language changes to the original ordinance, but the purpose of creating a TNR program is still the same. Subsequent readings like to be waived.

• Land purchase to meet setback requirements.
In October 2025, the city hired an engineer to design the replacement of four alluvial wells. State setback requirements meant more land was needed.

• Ladder truck equipment.
Council will consider purchasing fire equipment, radio equipment and thermal imaging equipment — estimated at >$50,000 — for the new ladder truck.
