The Esports and Gaming program is preparing to run its first major esports tournament later this semester. On April 13-14, they will host a Fortnite tournament in the esports and gaming lab as well as the surrounding classrooms in the Michael B. Alexander Science and Technology Center.

“We’re definitely trying to like really push the envelope of what the Lasell esports club can really do,” sophomore and Esports President Kiefer Harding said.

The tournament will consist of eight-player lobbies, with the total number of groups varying depending on sign-ups. The first player to win 15 rounds within their lobby will advance to the next stages of the competition. A $200 gift card will be the grand prize, but there will also be a $100 gift card for second place and $25 prizes for the player with the most kills and with the most damage caused.

When senior psychology major Eftihia Fotos’ parents were just twenty and seventeen years old, they came as refugees to America after fleeing their home in Greece that had been taken over by Albanian communist rule.

Now, the Auburn, Massachusetts native still considers Greece her second home, the country responsible for the two people for whom she credits her work ethic: her parents.

“They came here with nothing and they worked for everything, and I’m forever grateful for that.” Fotos said.

On July 1, Lasell University named Chief of Staff and General Counsel Jennifer OKeeffe as the Interim Assistant Vice President (AVP) of Athletics. This news came after Lasell decided to liquidate the Athletic Director position after the Spring semester of 2023.

Athletics is not the only program being restructured, however. Due to the hire of former provost and current president Eric Turner, former sports management professor and Vice President of Graduate and Professional Studies Chrystal Porter became the university’s new provost, while former dean of enrollment Chris Gray moved into a new role with the admissions office as associate vice president of enrollment management.

This shift affected many individuals, including Associate Vice President and Dean of Student Affairs Dave Hennessey. Hennessey, who is currently overseeing the athletics department, credits much of the sports teams’ success to OKeeffe…

This spring, the men’s baseball program will have a Junior Varsity (JV) team, with hopes that the development of younger players will be improved through more playing experience on the diamond. It will mark the first time in program history that the university’s baseball team will feature both a varsity and JV squad.

“I think this will help the varsity team tremendously. Younger guys will now have college experience playing in games and that makes a huge difference for nerves and comfortability,” senior outfielder Bryan Baumann said. “I definitely wish we had this my first year. We were a senior-heavy team so not many guys got in my first year. By having this program, we all could have possibly got an extra 20 at bats which makes a huge difference at the end of the day.“
