August 4th, 1990 - 35 years ago this week...
Firefighter Dave Schmidt is working his rotation in the NTFD Dispatch "Hole", when he takes a call on the NTFD business line from Bob's Sew and Vac on Webster Street.
Very casually, the caller says, "Hey, I'm sure you guys already know about this, but I see flames coming from the Salvation Army on Webster Street".
FF Schmidt is somewhat caught off guard, as he perks up and says, "No Sir, we haven't had any calls yet!"
The caller 's tone instantly turns to panic as he shouts: "WHAT??? YOU GUYS DON'T KNOW ABOUT THIS! THE SALVATION ARMY IS ON FIRE!"
FF Schmidt immediately sets up Box 51 (the run card for Webster Street) on the Gamewell system and punches it through.
All stations are now watching the joker tape punch out ^^^^^ ^ indicating Box 51, as the tones hit and the announcement comes over the radio.
In the meantime, NTPD Officer Jimmy Fox arrives on location and says over the radio to NTPD Dispatch, "Tell the Fire Department, whatever they are sending...... it isn't enough!"
Very shortly after, Firefighter Don French keys the microphone from Engine 4 and gives the most informative and concise report possible:
"Engine 4 will be laying in the big lines".
Nothing else needed to be said, as all other responding apparatus and personnel then knew the seriousness and scope of what they were arriving to.
The "Salvation Army Fire" has gone down not only in
NTFD lore, but in the historical context of the City of NT.
This fire is also another reminder of the cool, calm and collected nature of FF Don French who simply "laid in the big lines" when he was faced with a seemingly insurmountable task.
Anyone who's been around NT for a while can remember where they were and what they were doing on that Saturday morning in August of 1990 when the old Salvation Army store on Webster Street burned.
