This weekend is one of my favorite Philadelphia traditions – the S. 9th St. Festival. It’s usually a beautiful weekend with great food and drink and fantastic people watching. I would always try to go by with my camera and snap some street photos and one year was the very year they re-introduced the greased pole climb. Philadelphia has known for its grease poles, but this is the OG. Things have changed – that Rizzo Mural l is gone - but the grease pole and its crowds still remain.

Spring is the time for building, growing and nurturing. When I’m starting a new venture I sometimes think of these Village Weavers outside my camp when I was filming in Rwanda. The males make these really intricate nests weaving grass. To attract females they violently shake the nest to prove how strong it is. But each nest starts with just a single blade of grass tied to a branch. It is really delicate at the beginning. When the builder goes to get another blade, his neighbors and competitors tear apart his nest! Even when It’s amazing anything gets built! Not only that, if a female comes along, the builder will shake his delicate nest violently destroying it. But eventually through persistence, practice and little bit of luck, the nest eventually gets built. And maybe a female moves in and they raise a family. Maybe there’s some morals to learn from them or maybe it’s just a cool nature story.

Throw back to 2019, on a quest to find winter, I took a road trip to Canada via Niagara Falls. Just a few days before the falls had totally frozen. They were flowing when I visited but still the coldest weather I have ever experienced!

In June my car caught on fire. After pressing Subaru to do the fire investigation Allstate decided was a waste of time we got the results - inconclusive. Or at least as far as the Subaru employed fire inspector would admit to. I just can’t get over the fact that the AirTag that was in the now destroyed center console is STILL WORKING! Now I can just watch my car go from junkyard to junkyard throughout New England as I test drive useful cars.

This wraps up my last trip to DC to film for Caps Red Line this season. Starting a field/post producer job as a solo parent that required regular interstate travel was a tour de force of my own capabilities to adapt, keep my s**t together and make sure that Lula still felt safe and loved. It wasn’t possibly without my amazing village - both biological and found family - that could care for Lula and house me (and sometimes both). I’m forever grateful that you all stepped up to literally help my little family survive. It’s tough out there and you make it easy. 💕💕
