$500 is all I have ever made from content about how poor or violent crime ridden Niagara Falls NY is.

Thats literally it. Someone claimed I "profit" off Niagara Falls NY issues. Thats all I ever made and it was from a book of photos I personally took.

Nobody was out there with me when im doing my photos. Its always only ever been me, my gas money, my free time, ect.. so yea if I write a book im allowed to make a little bit of money, after spending 20 years of my own personal time documenting the decline of Niagara Falls NY.

For reference the average cost of rent in Niagara Falls NY is now $824 to $1,250 per month.

Im not out here making millions because of NF NY being f-cked up. Im out here trying to tell the story of this city that no one has been able to tell to the world.

Cuz there isnt a single person from the Falls who has yet to bring a Netflix crew to the city to give the world the REAL tour of the REAL side of this world known "tourist attraction".

People mad I talk about the same thing over and over and over. Aight bet. How about this. Since December 31st I've lost 60 pounds. Because I stopped eating sugar and I stopped eating carbs. I switched everything over to keto. You dont need wegovy, you dont need ozempic, you dont need a stomach staple. Just change your diet. I barely even exercise. The s**t works. Lol

Growing up in Niagara Falls, New York, you constantly hear the same thing:

“You’re lucky you live here." "Niagara Falls ain't s**t' “No one in this town would last a day in a REAL hood.” “Go to Detroit. Go to Compton. Go to Watts. Go to Harlem. Then you’ll see what a REAL ghetto looks like.”

So I did.

I went to Detroit. Compton. Watts. Harlem. Brooklyn. Queens. New Orleans.

And somehow, against all odds, I wasn’t shot, robbed, murdered, kidnapped, or instantly vaporized the second I stepped out of the car.

Detroit especially blew my mind, because half the time I was there I kept thinking: this just feels like a gigantic Niagara Falls, New York.

Different city. Different history. Different scale. But that same familiar mix of rough blocks, regular neighborhoods, abandoned buildings, working people, corner stores, beautiful architecture, poverty, redevelopment, and people just living their lives.

Compton was fun. Watts was fun. New Orleans was interesting as hell. New York City was extra regular. Nobody jumped out from behind a garbage can and murdered me for crossing into the neighborhood.

People need to stop listening to people from other cities who turn where they grew up into some mythical combat zone because it makes them sound tough.

Go see the world yourself.

So what exactly makes a neighborhood “the hood”?

The illegal guns. The stolen guns. The gun trafficking. The bullet holes in houses. The bullet holes in street signs. The shot-up cars. The memorials for shooting victims.

The street gangs. The neighborhood crews. The block-versus-block beefs. The gang graffiti. The territorial disputes. The drug crews. The retaliation.

The open-air drug dealing. The drug houses. The crack houses. The fentanyl. The he**in. The co***ne. The overdoses. The people overdosing outside. The needles. The pipes. The abandoned buildings being used to get high.

The reputation. The people telling you not to walk down certain streets at night. The people from the same city avoiding certain neighborhoods. The businesses that don’t want to come there.

The kids who aren’t allowed outside after dark. The people who avoid certain blocks. The businesses that close early. The residents who hear gunshots and barely react anymore.

The decades of population loss. The factory closures. The disinvestment. The declining tax base. The failed redevelopment. The urban decay.

So help me understand something.

If all of that still doesn’t qualify as “the hood”…

what exactly are we missing?

What is the magical final ingredient Niagara Falls, New York supposedly doesn’t have?

Because at some point, “you ain’t never seen a real hood” stops sounding like an argument and starts sounding like a competition.
