Friday December 12, 2025 Capital Region Evening Weather Briefing

The Geminid meteor shower, the best of the year, peaks this weekend from after dark on Saturday to just before daybreak on Sunday. Unfortunately that period looks cloudy for us, with maybe some partial clearing across the northern half of the area in Vermont prior to daybreak on Sunday. So there's some potential for seeing a few shooting stars there. Meteors will remain active through the 17th, so there will be some additional opportunities into the upcoming week.

We have a weak clipper system/front coming in tomorrow which will produce a largely cloudy day for Saturday. There will be some snow showers around through the day and into the night which could lead to some localized coatings...no big deal. Some southerly upslope in the morning cloud generate a band of light snow across the north with maybe an inch or two. And a weak coastal wave Saturday night could graze the Catskills, mid Hudson valley, into the Berkshires with an inch or two by daybreak Sunday. After we get into the low 30s on Saturday, expect much colder weather to return on Sunday with highs from the lower to mid 20s.

Global temperature numbers are in for November from Europe's Copernicus Climate Services showing November 2025 as the third warmest globally on record. The chart below shows the global surface temperature anomalies, or departures from the 1850-1900 baseline average. While we had a chilly November locally and continue with our colder than average weather pattern now (remember weather and climate are not the same thing) globally temperatures continue to climb due mainly to increasing concentrations of heat trapping gases in the atmosphere due to emissions. Copernicus says 2025 is on track to end as the 2nd or 3rd warmest year globally on record.

Ten days into December and it has been COLD! It's not record cold, but it's certainly noteworthy given how warm December's have been over the past decade. The first ten days of this December rank as the 19th coldest at Albany, looking at records back to 1874 with a mean temperature of 24.5°. 1989 holds the record for the coldest first ten days of December with a mean temperature of 16.3°. More cold to come in the short term.

A very different weather pattern was in play on this date last year when an atmospheric river impacted the region with heavy rainfall. If you've been following the news and watching the reports of major flooding in the Pacific northwest...that rain has been caused by an atmospheric river as well. They happen on both coasts. Here's a look back at the event that occurred here last year.

An atmospheric river of deep subtropical moisture, originating in the Gulf of Mexico, was focused along a slow moving strong cold front across the Appalachians

Lots of wind coming in for Thursday, gusts through the day and into Thursday night from 35-45 mph will be common. Temps. in the 20s through the day will feel like low teens.

Based on spotter observations through 6pm this evening, here's a rough idea of the snowfall distribution from today's snow event....still snowing in some places. So, when the next batch of observations come in, I'll fine tune this verification map.
