I'm starting to see some reports of camera visible aurora across northern Maine where skies are more clear, but also in the Catskills where clouds are thinner than across the rest of our area right now. Clouds are not working in our favor tonight, unfortunately, but I do expect some continued thinning through the night. So it's worth a look if you're out.

With the close of our meteorological summer yesterday, here's a look at the numbers. We had a warmer than average June, a much warmer than average July, but a cooler than average August. Summer overall cam in a little warmer than the 1991-2020 thirty year average landing as the 27th warmest on record looking at records back to 1874. Summer was also drier than average, punctuated by our exceptionally dry August.

Just an FYI, the space weather folks have been tracking a blast of strong solar wind coming off the sun due to arrive tonight/tomorrow morning which could trigger some northern lights. From the current NOAA forecasts it would appear the higher energy stream would peak sometime between 2 and 5am for possibly some low on the horizon views. Clouds, of course, are currently and issue and may remain an issue for us through the night though

Here's a look back at August temps. and rainfall at Albany. The month was cooler than average by a good margin, despite some heat early on, with a monthly temperature departure from average of 1.8°. August was also dry, a tie with 1828 for 7th driest on record.

Cloud to ground lightning has been detected near (within 10 miles) or over Lake George. If you can hear thunder, there is a chance of being struck by lightning. Move indoors or into a vehicle and remain there until you have not heard thunder for 30 minutes.
