As stewards of the land, we are well aware of the harm trash can do to our environment. If you see something please pick it up and ensure you tie down your load to eliminate accidental littering.

On that note, have you seen marine debris? Maybe lots of items in one place, or some large items that you just can't move yourself? Kawerak has a new project, Marine Debris Cleanup Project, to help get rid of debris that was displaced due to Typhoon Merbok. If you have seen debris, please report it to us so we can include them in our cleanup efforts!

This is such great news! The Alaska DNR Division of Mining, Land and Water, Mining Section, has rejected IPOP's Bonanza Channel Placer/Dredging Project permit application. I thank these people for doing their job, and taking it seriously.

Haven't posted in a while and now it's Iditarod time again. I'm offering history tours (call or text to arrange) and doing a couple of history talks—one at 1pm March 11 on Nome's history of storms, and the other at 11am March 12 on the history of the Discovery Saloon. I can also take people snowshoeing if you want to spend some quality time out of town (didn't list this on the calendar). Happy Iditarod!

Roam Nome, along with other birding guides, Alaska Audubon, and local Native organizations, hunters, campsite holders and residents, actively opposed this absurd plan to dredge in one of the most important migratory bird and subsistence areas accessible from Nome. Apologies in advance to tour guests who will witness this destructive and pointless activity.

A plan to dredge for gold in a Bering Strait area considered important for fish, wildlife and subsistence got an OK from the Corps.

Happy Iditarod! It's time to post our cover of the Iditarod Trail Song (with cameos by REAL Iditarod mushers!), a classic written by "Hobo Jim" Varsos. Dallas Seavey yesterday became the record-breaking six-time Iditarod champion when he and his dog team arrived in Nome. Lots more mushers on the way!

Coming to Nome during Iditarod? There's lots to do! I will give a presentation on the history of our house, the former Discovery Saloon, at 11am Friday, March 15, at the museum. Built in 1899, the Discovery was converted into a residence in 1917. As the oldest surviving building in Nome, its story traces the history of the town.

Thanks to those now "following" this new page! As of March 1, Google is doing away with the basic Google-my-business page that I've had for the last couple of years. Facebook seemed like the next easiest way to have a website of sorts. Thanks for checking it out!
