You may already know the importance of the mental side of sport and performance, but let’s break down some common false ideas about mental skills training!

🚫It’s only for “problem” athletes
✅ Anyone can benefit from mental skills training, and working with a mental performance consultant does NOT mean you are a “problem” athlete!

🚫It’s only for elite athletes
✅ Athletes and performers of all ages, abilities and skill levels can benefit from and participate in mental skills training.

🚫All pro athletes are born mentally tough
✅ Everyone is born with different skill sets- mental skills can be acquired and shaped through consistent practice, just like physical skills!

🚫It is a quick fix
✅There is no overnight solution to improve mental skills. Consistency is key to seeing results, so you should meet with a mental performance coach or CMPC regularly and practice effectively!

🚫It doesn’t work
✅When mental skills are practiced consistently over time and training is individualized for the athlete or performer, performance will be enhanced!

Confrontation often gets a bad rap and tends to have a negative connotation. We may even feel anxiety or uneasiness surrounding confrontation. How will the other person respond? How will this impact our relationship?

Confrontation is a necessary part of effective communication for ANY relationship! Taking the first step might be hard and uncomfortable, but it doesn’t have to be a daunting, negative experience!

Here are some DO’s and DON’Ts to follow:

🗣️ DO plan out your thoughts beforehand. Write out what you plan to say and practice before having the conversation.
🗣️ DON’T engage when angry. Anger is a perfectly normal emotion, but sometimes it prevents us from thinking rationally, and you might say things you don’t truly mean.
🗣️ DO express your thoughts and feelings in a constructive manner.
🗣️ DON’T attack or downplay the other person’s feelings/opinion.
🗣️ DO listen carefully to the other person’s perspective

Next time you have to engage in confrontation, remember some of these do’s and don’ts! The more you practice having more challenging conversations, the easier they will become.

Intrinsic motivation is engaging in sport or activity for self satisfaction, internal desire, or self-enjoyment, while extrinsic motivation comes from outside sources such as rewards, approval from others, or avoiding a negative outcome. Things like scholarships, medals, and jackets can be examples of extrinsic rewards.

Think of motivation on a continuum- everyone has varying levels of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation for engaging in sport or physical activity. Individuals with high levels of self determination have high levels of intrinsic motivation- they have an internal desire to accomplish tasks and don’t tend to rely on outside factors. Studies have shown that TOO MANY extrinsic rewards, especially when that person is already intrinsically motivated, can actually lead to LOWER levels of intrinsic motivation. When you lose intrinsic motivation and are fully extrinsically motivated to complete a task or engage in sport, it is not sustainable motivation.

Both types of motivation drive human behavior and our pursuit of our goals. It’s important to understand each type of motivation, how/when you are motivated, and when it’s appropriate for a given situation!

Final exams, holiday planning, travel, scrambling to accomplish end of year goals- this is a stressful time for many! It’s important to take a step back, relax, and prioritize caring for yourself! Anything that makes you happy and has a positive impact on your overall health qualifies as self-care, but here are a few examples if you need some ideas to unwind and take a break!

1. Get moving! Walking, running, yoga, lifting weights- these all benefit both mental and physical health. Turn on your favorite song or podcast while you’re at it!

2. Clear your mind! Practice mindfulness, be present in the current moment

3. Eat your favorite meal, make it yourself or go to your favorite restaurant!

4. Take a break from studying by reading your favorite book, watching your favorite movie or an episode or two of your favorite show

5. Reach out- social support is important! Talk to friends, coaches, counselors- the community around you is there to help when you need it

Self care is personal and looks different for everyone, but it’s important to take time to do something that positively benefits your mental and physical well-being regularly! So take a break and take care of YOU!!!

Did you know gratitude can improve both individual and team performance??

Grateful athletes tend to have higher levels of enjoyment in sport, increased team cohesion and social support (WE over ME mentality!!), increased self esteem, and lower levels of burnout!

Try writing down what you were thankful for each morning/night or at the end of the week. Write out a thank you letter to someone who helped you at practice or gave you advice (you don’t even have to give it to them!)

Cultivate an attitude of gratitude- it’s easy to be grateful when you are performing well, but consistently practicing gratitude can make it easier to reframe setbacks when they happen!!

Majority of people would say mental toughness is an important quality of a successful athlete- but what does it mean to be mentally tough??

A large portion of mental toughness is resilience- the ability to bounce back from errors and setbacks. Resilience is not just experiencing adversity, it’s about overcoming it!

How can you become more resilient as an athlete?

▫️Practice in positive, motivating environments. Social support from teammates and coaches is important to maintaining confidence and motivation in the face of adversity!

▫️Training with a mental performance consultant to hone your mental skills- ability to regulate emotions, high levels of self-confidence, and communication skills are attributes of mentally tough athletes

Every athlete copes with mistakes and errors differently. It’s not about how many mistakes you make, but how you overcome them and let them improve your performance!

Concentration is your ability to maintain focus on relevant environmental cues and disregard irrelevant cues! Here are just a few ways to improve your concentration to improve your performance:

1. Learn to shift your attention between different tasks and cues

2. “Park” your thoughts- Leave negative or intruding thoughts in a safe place and come back to them at a later time

3. Practice maintaining focus on just one object

4. Add environmental distractions (crowd noise, loud music, visual distractions, etc.) into practice settings to become more comfortable shifting attention and focusing on relevant cues

5. Establish a routine- routines help with mental preparation for performance
