The LSCE dims its’ lights for the passing of the late, great Lalo Schifrin. Schifrin was an amazing composer and wrote some iconic film scores and television themes, infusing them with Latin flavored jazz and bluesy riffs. Mission Impossible, Cool Hand Luke, Coogan’s Bluff, Dirty Harry, The Exorcist- all benefited from his sonic brilliance. One of my own personal favorites is his theme to “Magnum Force” (seriously, it slaps). Thank you for all of the fantastic music Mr. Schifrin. RIP.

1975. One of our all-time favorites turned 50 today, so you know we had to screen it ourselves. So much here to love: Director Spielberg’s using “Hitchcockian” techniques to make up for troubles with the animatronic shark; writer Carl Gottlieb elevating and streamlining Benchley’s pulpy story with humor; and killer performances from Robert Shaw, Richard Dreyfus, and Roy Schieder, respectively. Rich with meaning, there are so many ways to interpret the story. To some, a meditation on man vs. nature. For others, our three leads embody the classical modes of persuasion- ethos (Brody), logos (Hooper), & pathos (Quint). But in the end, we get a rollicking adventure about battling a fish- what more could you ask for…except maybe a bigger boat? The LSCE is proud to screen the modern classic “Jaws.” Roll it!

In 1980s Hollywood, adult film star and aspiring actress Maxine Minx is finally poised to get her big break…that is until a mysterious killer with a trail of blood threatens to reveal her sinister past. Directed by the great Ti West and starring Mia Goth, Elizabeth Debicki, Moses Sumney, Michelle Monaghan, Bobby Cannavale, Halsey, Lily Collins, Giancarlo Esposito, and Kevin Bacon- this is how you close out a Friday night. The LSCE brings a horror trilogy to a close, proudly screening the neon-soaked nightmare “MaxXxine.” Roll it!

2003. 21 years ago on a brisk Saturday morning in October, conflict adverse me got into a heated argument with a stranger over tonight’s film. As I was exiting a fantastic show, a gentleman in his early 50’s who didn’t care for the film was working himself up and trying to get fellow audience member’s angry as well, the end goal being that a full refund be issued. He got in my face after I told him that I really thought it was a fantastic tribute to the genre, and intimated it was meant for “people like me, without taste.” While that may have been true, he didn’t know that- and it was on. Two decades later, I still maintain my position…and I hope the chap back in the day took my parting advice and dropped dead. Directed by Quentin Tarantino and starring Uma Thurman, Lucy Liu, Michael Madsen, Daryl Hannah, Vivica A. Fox, Sonny Chiba, and David Carradine- this is how you Saturday night. The LSCE is proud screen the revenge opus “Kill Bill: Vol 1.” Roll it!
