The Feast of St. Luke the Evangelist

Author of the third gospel and the Acts of the Apostles, St. Luke the Evangelist grew to know and love Christ from interviews he conducted with eyewitnesses to the life, death and resurrection of Jesus. These accounts are recorded in his gospel. Unique to it are the telling of miracles and parables not found in the other gospels, including The Prodigal Son. He also seemed to hold a close love for the women in Christ’s life, as it is he who tells of Mary’s Magnificat. His gospel speaks of the complete love Christ has for the sinner and the unfailing mercy shown to those who seek forgiveness. St. Luke the Evangelist is the patron saint of physicians and because it is believed that he painted portraits of Mary, artists as well.

The Feast of St. Ignatius of Antioch

The second bishop of Antioch, St. Ignatius of Antioch was condemned to death for refusing to denounce his faith. On his way to Rome to be executed, he wrote seven letters to his followers in which he discussed the hierarchy and structure of the Church as well as its orthodoxy. He was the first to use the term “catholic” to refer to the whole church. St. Ignatius of Antioch died in Rome in 107 after being thrown to wild animals. He is the patron saint of throat diseases as well as the Church in the eastern Mediterranean and North Africa. His relics reside in St. Peter’s Basilica, Rome.

The Feast of St. Margaret Mary Alacoque

Following her promise to consecrate her life to Christ, St. Margaret Mary Alacoque was immediately cured of a four-year paralysis. She joined the Visitation Convent at Paray and began receiving visions of Christ over the next 13 months. Christ instructed her to establish the Feast of the Sacred Heart… and revealed the 12 promises which would be given to those who practiced a true devotion. She died at just 43 years of age, was canonized in 1920 and is the patron saint of sufferers of polio and devotees of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

The Feast of St. Teresa of Avila

A childhood spent reading about the lives of saints and days spent playing “hermit” created a holy foundation for St. Teresa of Avila which sustained her in times of grave illnesses and the early death of her mother. It provided the strength to enter religious life despite opposition from her father. And when there were periods when worldly distractions interfered with prayer, it drew her back to God. Her deep contemplative prayer led her work of reforming her Carmelite order and the founding of 30 more, known as the Discalced Carmelites. Her writings, Way of Perfection and The Interior Castle, have served as a guide to countless others. When she died in 1582, she considered her 67 years of life the end of her exile from God. St, Teresa of Avila was canonized in 1622 and declared a Doctor of the Church in 1970.

The Feast of St. Pope Callistus I

From highly-favored servant to slave to pope, St. Pope Callistus I became a deacon who advised Pope Zephrinus after being freed from slavery. He was also the caretaker of a Roman Christian cemetery which still exists and bears his name. As pope, he chose to emphasize God’s mercy and belief that even the worst sins would be forgiven if a sincere confession were made. This teaching was central to a schism which lasted almost two decades because it was in direct conflict with Hippolytus, the first antipope. St. Callistus I was martyred in 222; in death his intercession is believed to have united Hippolytus with Pope Pontian.

The Feast of St. Edward the Confessor

Overlooked as the rightful king of England in favor of his half-brother, St. Edward the Confessor lived in exile until he was rightfully returned to the throne. Already pious, being exiled emphasized the need to reject earthly possessions and to devote himself entirely to the love of God. He was well-loved for his saintliness and his works for justness for everyone. It was also said that his touch would cure illness. Pope Leo IX asked him to rebuild Westminster of St. Peter’s Abbey and it is here that his incorrupt body rests to this day. He is the only saint buried here and this is one of the few abbeys not destroyed by King Henry VIII. “The Confessor” was added to his name because of his great piety.
