Show A Novel Idea Bookshop some love

I want to be honest about where things stand. The past two months have been unusually slow, and after the first week of September, I had only 176 sales, just 8.8% of my monthly goal.

For the past 2½ years, I’ve poured everything I have into keeping this bookstore open. I have not taken a paycheck even once. I’ve worked side jobs, drained our personal savings, and borrowed against our 401(k) to keep the dream going. I’m now working 16-hour days, and this is no longer financially sustainable.

We’ve heard that using our personal finances to keep the bookstore going is “bad business.” Please know that we’re aware of the risks, but we made those sacrifices because we believe in this community and wanted to keep the dream alive. We’ve done everything we can, but we cannot do it alone.

I know this bookstore matters to my community, which is why I’m asking for your support. If you’re able to help:

📚 Join one of my monthly membership tiers
📚 Purchase books directly from me
📚 DM me or use my website’s special-order form for books I don’t have in stock
📚 Share this post with someone who loves independent bookstores

Every purchase, membership, special order, and share makes a difference. Thank you for supporting my little bookstore.

In Lochiel, Arizona, a single ancient cottonwood tree stands in the way of the construction of Donald Trump's border wall. For two weeks, demonstrators have occupied the tree and defended it against construction crews and border patrol.

They invite you to act in solidarity with them.

Yesterday, WIRED learned that Madison Square Garden was suing us for our accurate reporting.

In April of this year, we published a story delving into the MSG panopticon–a surveillance machine that allegedly tracked a trans woman, lawyers, protesters, and more.

This month, we published another article revealing that MSG kept a database of VIP event attendees, labeling some of them as LGBTQIA. A number of entries were assigned a “risk score,” and some of them were even marked as “DO NOT HOST.”

We have decided to lift the paywall on both stories, making them available for everyone to read.

This is “Witches, Midwives, and Nurses: A History of Women Healers," a text that has been popular in feminist and nursing history reading circles for over 50 years. It’s also one of the pieces of literature that feds decided was so dangerous that they gave a Texas man 30 years in federal prison for it last month.

Reading about the history of women healers is not a crime. Neither is organizing your neighbors or showing up for immigrants in your community. We stand with the 15 Minnesota protesters and union activists and demand all charge be dropped.

We stand with every nurse, organizer, and neighbor who refuses to look away and who keeps showing up. Care work like nursing is radical because we care for everyone, but that's what we do. As union nurses know, when the people in charge start targeting you, it's because they're scared of the power we have.
