🕊️ Today marks the 10th anniversary of the tragedy at Mother Emanuel in Charleston. We remember the nine loved ones ripped away from their families—eight parishioners and their pastor—whose legacies of love, forgiveness, resilience, and faith continues to inspire us all:

Rev. Sharonda Coleman-Singleton / Cynthia Graham Hurd / Susie J. Jackson / Ethel Lee Lance / Rev. DePayne Vontrese Middleton / The Honorable Rev. Clementa C. Pinckney / Tywanza Kibwe Diop Sanders / Rev. Daniel L. Simmons, Sr. / Myra Singleton-Quarles Thompson

The 2025 SC African American History Calendar featured several remarkable people whose family members were killed in the Mother Emanuel shooting and highlights their efforts to build upon the work of their loved ones, choosing hope over despair. We hope their stories inspire each of you.

This school year, I had the chance to be part of something really special: Project Raise Your Hand, a volunteer initiative from the South Carolina Department of Education.

I spent time in a third grade classroom, and it quickly became one of the most meaningful parts of my week. The students welcomed me with open arms, and it reminded me just how much impact a simple act of presence and encouragement can have.

Project Raise Your Hand is all about building a network of volunteers—from businesses, churches, nonprofits, and the community—to support our schools, teachers, and students. It’s part of our agency’s larger goal to ensure that by 2030, at least 75% of students are at or above grade level and that every child graduates college, career, or military ready.

If you’re looking for a way to give back, I can’t recommend this enough. There’s a place for everyone, whether it’s mentoring, helping with classroom tasks, or just sitting with students at lunch.

You don’t have to do a lot to make a difference. Sometimes, it just takes raising your hand. ❤️

Today, we proudly recognized South Carolina high school seniors who have committed to serving our nation after graduation during the 2025 Military Honor Cord Ceremony.

This year’s event was hosted by the South Carolina Department of Education, in partnership with Fort Jackson. The Military Honor Cord ceremony honors the dedication, courage, and sacrifice of students entering the U.S. Armed Forces.

A special thank-you to our master of ceremonies, Dawndy Mercer Plank On Cam, and all our speakers for helping make this celebration meaningful and memorable.

I’d like to thank each of these young men and women—and their families—for answering the call to serve. South Carolina is proud of you. 🇺🇸 ❤️

“What would you do in the last hour of your life?“

On this day, we remember the lives lost on 9/11 and honor the heroes who selflessly acted in the face of unimaginable tragedy. People like Welles Crowther, "the man in the red bandana," whose courage saved so many lives. Thank you to the brave souls—known and unknown—who gave everything. In the midst of our shared grief, we found stories of hope, resilience, and love that continue to inspire us. We will never forget. 🇺🇸

“..the South Carolina General Assembly appears poised to join a growing number of states in prohibiting cellphones during the school day. And you can bet my department is eager to aid schools around our state in making this policy work effectively.”

Read State Superintendent Ellen Weaver’s opinion piece on cell phone usage in schools. ⬇️⬇️⬇️

Education Superintendent Ellen Weaver says legislative proposal to prohibit students from using cell phones while they're at school will help teachers and kids.
