A new lawsuit says two of the most popular tequila brands in the world-DonJulio and Casamigos-may not be as “pure” as they claim.
The company behind both brands, , is being sued for allegedly lying to customers by saying the tequilas are “100% agave” when lab tests reportedly show they might contain cheaper alcohol like cane sugar spirits instead.
This is a big deal because tequila bottles labeled “100% agave” are supposed to only use Blue Weber agave, which is a high-quality plant grown in Mexico. Using any other type of alcohol is against the rules for that label and could mean the brand tricked people into paying more for something they didn’t really get.
The lawsuit was filed in New York and is asking for over $5 million in damages. The people suing say Diageo fooled customers and broke their trust by charging top dollar for tequilas that might not be what they seem.
Diage has denied everything, saying Don Julio and Casamigos are made with 100% Blue Weber agave and that they always follow the rules.
As of now, it’s all still in court. 🧐🤔
