Many of us fans have wondered why Elvis would lie on his back while performing, looking up, especially when wearing that iconic white jumpsuit. The image of a guy giving his best and then simply letting go became so recognizable. It wasn't merely for show, though. For Elvis, it served as a real release, a means of temporarily letting go of the tremendous weight he bore all the time.

Those who really paid attention saw the genuine Elvis, even though others might have thought he was aloof. Beneath the celebrity and the meticulously manicured exterior was a really tender and sensitive soul. He was more than just a performer; he was a guy with a great deal of responsibility to his music, his family, his admirers, and the extravagant image that society demanded of him.

He hardly ever had time to rest, to be vulnerable, to just be himself. Thus, his little haven in front of everyone was lying there on stage, staring up as the lights dimmed and the applause subsided. He seemed to be saying to the heavens, ""I gave absolutely everything."" It was his silent resignation.

Elvis wasn't performing at those times; he was just being, which is why many of us consider them to be among our favorites. There was only a man catching his breath after bearing expectations that were too great for any one person to handle—no mask, no pressure to impress. Touring was always physically draining for Elvis Presley, even long before the obvious strain of touring in the 1970s. Photo shows exhausted Elvis backstage after a show in May of 1956.

Elvis had made it big. His fan base grew exponentially amongst young women, and they followed him everywhere. The first half of 1956 was especially busy.
He was still touring at the same pace of 1955, but with the added trips back and forth to New York or Los Angeles for television appearances. In the first half of 1956, Elvis did 122 shows. After a February show in Jacksonville, Florida, Elvis collapsed unconscious in the parking lot and was taken to the hospital via ambulance.
He was diagnosed with extreme exhaustion and was admitted to the hospital for the night. “The doctor warned him to slow down,” recalled Cousin Gene Smith. “He got up and walked out of that hospital twelve hours later his argument for not staying to recuperate was that he had promises to keep and he had to honor his commitments.” Elvis had added another group of people he was committed to providing for, his fans.
Around his entourage, Elvis blew off the incident as if it was nothing. He prided himself on being a strong male and never wanted to appear weak. In an attempt to avoid the embarrassment he felt over the episode, Elvis told Memphis Mafia member Red West that he faked his collapse. He claimed he just wanted his head on singer Anita Carter’s lap.
In truth, the pace of life on the road was taking a toll, even at his young age. Elvis’ life-long insomnia was adding to the stress.
The guy who had always seemed to have too much energy was suddenly running low. The national press picked up on it too. In an article in Caberet titled “Who the Hell is Elvis Presley?” that was printed in August 1956, writer Leonard Bennett said of Elvis: “He doesn’t drink, but he doesn’t eat much either … He cannot sleep … He’s collapsed several times. Doctors who’ve examined him say they marvel at how he’s still standing, his exhaustion is so great.”
In the spring of 1956, Elvis bought his first home for himself and his parents. It was a ranch-style house in a well-to-do part of Memphis on Audubon Drive. It had four bedrooms, two and a half baths, and was practically brand-new having been built in 1954.
The small family had come a long way since bouncing from rental to rental in Tupelo. At age twenty-one, Elvis provided his parents with a stable home. He had accomplished his main goal. Elvis had fulfilled his promise.
