🎬 Review of How to Train Your Dragon – Hiccup
The live-action version of How to Train Your Dragon (2025) is a bold transformation from the legendary animated series of DreamWorks. Under the hands of director Dean DeBlois - who has helmed all three animated parts - this film still retains the spirit of adventure, maturity and deep emotions, but wears a surprisingly vivid and realistic appearance.
The main character Hiccup (played by Mason Thames) is a skinny, weak Viking boy, not suitable for the warrior standards of the Berk tribe. But his journey with the Night Fury dragon - Toothless - changes the future of both humans and dragons. The friendship between Hiccup and Toothless is the heart of the film - still touching, still quietly breaking down prejudices without too many ostentatious lines.
The most notable point is the way the film balances modern cinematography and authentic emotions. The scenes of flying in the sky with Toothless are completely convincing visually, while the father-son relationship between Hiccup and Stoick still retains depth, especially through Gerard Butler's subtle inner acting.
However, some segments are somewhat shortened, making the film's pace a bit fast, not enough time to fully portray the inner depth of supporting characters such as Astrid, Fishlegs or Snotlout. However, those who love the original will definitely still feel satisfied.
⭐ Rating: 8.5/10
A proud adaptation, bringing a deep emotional experience with impressive visuals. How to Train Your Dragon - Hiccup is a reminder that growing up does not mean losing your heart - but learning to trust, love and... tame the things we used to fear.
