I have been a radio communications hobbyist for over 32 years, and tonight, for the first time, ionospheric propagation conditions were just right to allow me to bounce radio signals off of Earth’s ionosphere, Earth’s surface, and ocean to communicate with someone in Antarctica on a ham radio. I spoke with Rafal (personal call sign SQ4Q) at the Henryk Arctowski Polish Antarctic Station (station call sign HF0PAS). I calculated the following path using current atmospheric conditions.

My ham radio call sign is NA1VE (formerly K1EXT). This is my base amateur radio station. Yaesu 991a (radio), Yaesu M1 (mic with a Aokeo three-layer wind screen and a Stedman Proscreen XL V2 pop filter attached), feeding through an LMR600 coax to a Cobra Ultralite Senior dipole antenna (covers 12 radio bands from 10 meters - 160 meters which is 140 feet long), and feeding through another LMR600 coax to a Diamond V2000a vertical antenna on a 30 foot mast, (covers 3 bands including 70 centimeters, 2 meters, and 6 meters.) Other equipment seen is a Galaxy DX 2517 (10 meter radio) with an Astatic D104M6B (hand mic) which feeds a 10 meter dipole antenna, MFJ939 (tuner), MFJ993B (tuner), MFJ 864 (SWR wattmeter), Baofeng BF-F8HP (dual band walkie talkie), Yaesu SP10 (speaker), Apple M2 Ultra Mac Studio (computer), and a Innocn 40 inch 5k (monitor). The total station costs approximately $8,000.

As of 2am today the Federal Communications Commission has authorized me to use a new 2x2 format call sign for those with an amateur extra class license. My new call sign is NA1VE. My old license, K1EXT is now cancelled. I am unable to manually change my page name to reflect the new license, but I have asked Facebook tech support to do it for me.
