This year marks our 14th year running in commemoration of the Wounded Knee Massacre of 1890, honoring the ancestors who escaped and ran from the U.S. Army’s mass killing of the Lakota people.
Many Mnicoujou, Hunkpapa, and Oglala relatives fled unarmed—children, elders, men, and women—forced to escape through blizzards, deep snow, ice, and brutal terrain. The military searched for any tracks they could find, pursuing those who survived the massacre at Wounded Knee.
We run from the Wounded Knee site back to Cheyenne River, retracing over 160 miles, the path some of our ancestors took to survive for us to be here today.
We have many descendants who join the run each year, and many more who support from the sidelines, including our allies. All are welcome.
