This one hits close to home for so many reasons. One of my earliest memories was being a kid hanging around Humboldt park with my family and looking up at this HUGE PR flag spanning from one side of the street to the other—I remember feeling pride.
I wore that pride in every conversation from that day forward.
I saw that pride in the tiny boxing gloves and flags hanging off the rearview mirrors of cars, keychains, bracelets, necklaces, bumper stickers, towels, porches, you name it.
I heard that pride during the summer where hundreds of people would wear the flag like a cape—I understood that being boricua was a super power.

I spent years feeling like I wasn’t a real puertorican because i’m two generations away from the island and speak TERRIBLE spanish…but the culture was always alive on our tables, our radios, our hello’s and see you later’s—I learned to hang onto that.
The generations that grew up away from the island understands how complicated this feeling can get. But, this project wasn’t a search for identity—it was an acknowledgment that the culture is enough. Within our culture there is always community, whether you have a dialect from the island or not.
Creating MUNDO AL REVÉS during a time where there are people fighting for their homes, their land, let alone the very EXISTENCE of their culture was a heavy reminder that we are all we got. If you feel pride from where your family is from, my hope is that you hang onto that feeling during the toughest of times.
We may not come directly from the island, but the island is always with us. From the playground to the discovery meetings—Puerto Rico, te quiero.
