Harpersfield_ U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown-D, paid a visit to the Ferrante Winery and Ristorante Tuesday to voice support for the proposed "Pairings Ohio" incubator in Geneva. Brown, sponsor of the Business Incubator Promotion Act (BIPA), described the need for small business incubators to an audience of local government officials and business owners.
"Nearly two-thirds of the jobs are created by small businesses," Brown said. "Ashtabula County has done some pretty interesting things; especially with the issue of incubators."
Democrats and Republicans alike listened as Brown stressed the need of his legislation to help business incubators.
"There is generally bipartisan agreement in the Congress on many of the things we should be doing to help small business and incubators," Brown said. "Incubators are especially important; they provide technical assistance to help entrepreneurs take a viable idea and turn it into a viable economic enterprise."
The "Pairings Ohio" Incubator idea is relying on donations, grants and fund raisers to become a reality for Ashtabula County. Sen. Brown's new legislation would help support business incubators like "Pairings Ohio', he said. More Ohio communities would become eligible for funding that supports business incubators through the U.S. Economic Development Administration (EDA).
"Every $10,000 of EDA investment by the federal government creates between 40 to 70 jobs," Brown said.
Incubator support has already created hundreds of thousands jobs by providing start-up companies with support services Brown said.
"This legislation (BIPA) is aimed at helping these hard-hit regions create higher skill, higher wage jobs," Brown said. "Competitive grants will help communities introduce new businesses and expand existing ones."
James Pearson, Geneva mayor, Mark Winchell, board president of the proposed Pairings, Ohio's Wine and Culinary Experience Incubator, Jim Arbaczewski, past president of the Ohio Wine Producers Association, and Susan Stocker, dean of Kent State University - Ashtabula, also provided a few comments how BIPA will help more entrepreneurs start their small businesses.

Car hits house early Tuesday

William A. West - WNS -

ASHTABULA_The sound of squealing tires followed by a large bang in the very early morning caught the attention of some residents living in the 800 block of East 6th Street in Ashtabula. A car being driven at a high rate of speed spun sideways and skidded across the front lawn of 800-802 E. 6th St. before striking a house at 814 E. 6th St. about 2:50 a.m. Tuesday.
"I heard the whole thing, the squealing tires and the loud sound of a crash," Brad Wight said. "I could hear one of the victims shouting out," "Where's my fu***ng phone?"
Mark V***a lives just east of 814 and made the 911 call.
"I felt the impact and boom, but could not see the car," V***a said. "I heard someone saying don't call the cops."
"I told them you've hit a house, you can't just leave," V***a said.
Melissa Wallace, who lives at 814 E. 6th St. was in a deep sleep after studying late into the night for an anatomy test she was scheduled to take in the morning.
""I didn't hear a thing," Wallace said.
The accident was investigated by Ohio Highway Patrol because the Ashtabula Police were busy investigating a stabbing that occurred earlier on Bridge Street in the harbor.

Disabled Resident Escapes Fire

Wiiliam A. West - WNS -

Conneaut_ The trailer was completely engulfed by fire when firefighters from Stations One and Three arrived on the scene about 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at Krone's Trailer Park. Fortunately, resident Ron Myers had recovered from a seizure just in time to leave his smoke-filled trailer as someone reported the fire at 413 E. Main Road to the Conneaut Fire Department.
Firefighters put on their air paks and masks to extinguish the smoldering remnants inside the burned-out aluminum shell.
"I was drying a cereal bowl I used for breakfast when the seizure hit me," Myers said. "The toaster was on top of the stove and it wasn't plugged in, but it was on fire when I came to. I must have turned on the stove when I fell to the floor."
Myers suffers from epilepsy because of a fractued skull injury he said.
"I walked out all right," Myers said. "I'm OK, but the mutherf**kin' trailer isn't."
Myers has no insurance and will probably stay with his friend Dave for a couple of days he said.
"I've got places to go," Myers said.
Firefighters remained at the scene for more than an hour.
