Ever find “fossil soup”?

“Fossil soup” is another amazing rock that can be found throughout a large portion of the state of Minnesota. These UV reactive stones date back to the Paleozoic and Mesozoic marine environments. (Roughly 300 - 500 million years ago) “Fossil soup” is a jumbled up mix of marine invertebrates, which can contain crinoids, brachiopods, corals, bryozoans and so many more.

I believe Mother Nature has done a fantastic job with every Lake Superior agate. Although, some of them need a little extra help to completely showcase all of their beauty. Before and after pictures of a eye agate I recently face polished. Notice the copper inclusions around the pupil.

While the Lake Superior agate is one of Minnesota most popular rocks, we do have other amazing rock finds amongst our beautiful state. One of them is petrified wood, found in a large portion of the state. A lot of the petrified wood is found in areas affected by the Des Moines lobe glacier. The superior lobe is responsible for a large amount of the Lake Superior agates, although lakers can be found throughout a large portion of the state due to years of erosion. One of the special features of our petrified wood is a percentage of it it will react under UV longwave light in oranges or yellows. The color is usually due to trace amounts calcite or manganese within the fossilized structure.

I recently acquired some amazing pieces of a new find calcite. “Med city calcite” This new calcite comes from the tailings of a very large job site, found deep within in the bedrock in Olmsted county; Minnesota. This material is highly uv reactive and phosphorescent, midwave light showing the most stunning results.

Today I stopped by an estate sale and walked away with a rain gauge and a bag of rocks all for $5, the rain gauge cost $3.
There are definitely some fantastic gems in this bag of rocks, a few fossils, fools gold, quartz, galena, possibly some chrysocalla and much more. What got me was the rock that has the very old almost unreadable tag attached. (Ill be doing some research in to that one!😉) This was at one point a part of someone’s prized collection of stones. In the end we are just care takers of these amazing gifts from Mother Nature. Someday these may end at my estate sale….. the rain gauge will be long gone, I hope they get more then 2$ for the rocks. 😆
