Who knew?
In the later years of his life, Groucho Marx, legendary comedian and sharp-tongued wit, struggled with chronic insomnia. Living in Beverly Hills, he often found himself wide awake deep into the night. His unlikely solution? Calling up his neighbor: none other than shock-rocker Alice Cooper.
Despite the stark contrast in their public personas - Groucho, the cigar-wielding wisecracker from Hollywood’s golden age, and Alice, the theatrical face of 1970s rock, they developed a genuine friendship.
Whenever Groucho couldn’t sleep, he’d phone Alice, who would happily walk over with a six-pack of beer in hand. The two would sit together, watching old black-and-white films late into the night, talking, laughing, and sharing stories.
Groucho found comfort in the presence of someone younger who genuinely admired him. Alice Cooper has often said that their friendship meant the world to him, and that Groucho helped him navigate fame with more humor and perspective. It’s one of Hollywood’s most unexpected and heartwarming friendships
