The North Platte Bulletin

The North Platte Bulletin An independent news service for west-central Nebraska We launched the Bulletin in April 2003 in the basement of a home off downtown North Platte.

A subscription to our weekly print edition is just $48 a year for Lincoln County residents... $53 for outside of the county. When we started, we dedicated our effort to straightforward news about North Platte — a community that is vital to central and western Nebraska. Having worked in journalism for many years, we were tired of, even sometimes ashamed of, the corporate news structure and its fran

chised approach to people and events — and stories about things that happen in faraway places. We knew creating the weekly Bulletin would be a tough but joyful business. We publish a weekly print issue plus a special edition for Nebraskaland Days. More than 25,000 news stories have appeared on our website – nearly 2,500 in the last year alone — an average of nearly seven stories each day of the year. We don’t belong to any state or national news service. We are truly a homegrown newspaper. We’ve covered the hottest stories and projects as well as the smallest, paying attention to the cop on the street, the criminal behind bars, the history of the county and the impressive variety of arts, entertainment and good deeds. In our community, we are proud to organize and host the annual "Music on the Bricks" weekends. We have hosted twice-a-month Open Mic Nites for more than 15 years and in the past, emceed at Rail Fest and the Country Bluegrass festival. We have covered most every facet of North Platte and Lincoln County, and we believe it is the best place to live and work in Nebraska.

Nominations are now open in the Beauty of the Holidays lighting competition, which is organized each year by Keep North Platte and Lincoln County Beautiful and the North Platte Bulletin.

The friendly competition is a way to salute the accomplishments of those who put up yard decorations and make the Christmas holidays brighter for everyone.

If you know the work of someone who shares the holiday spirit through yard decorations, please nominate them in the contest.

Anyone can nominate a home. It can even be your own. Submit the name of owner, address, brief description of the display, a photo (if possible), and directions that might help locate the property.

The nomination deadline is 4 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 10.

Send nominations one of these ways:

Facebook Message: the North Platte Bulletin or Keep North Platte and Lincoln County Beautiful.
Email: [email protected] or [email protected].
Phone: 308-534-8100 – leave a message with requested information.

This year’s prize sponsors are Zeller Motors Co., Rooster Roll-Offs/ Rooster Sanitation, Cody Keno and Brother’s Tavern.

Prize money will be awarded to the top winners and color photos of the homes will be published in the Bulletin‘s print paper, online and social media.

Winners will be selected in each of North Platte’s 4 city wards as well as a home outside the city limits, within Lincoln County.

Judging will be based on curb appeal, balance, theme and maintenance.

There is time to get everything set in the yard: Entries will be judged Friday-Sunday, Dec.12-14. The lights must be on from 5-10 p.m. those nights and the display must be seen from the nearest street or road.

The first-place winners from 2024 are not eligible to win a prize this year. Otherwise, everyone can enter.

It’s important to get your nomination in, because only the homes that are nominated will be judged. One nomination is enough. The judges will decide the winners.

Good luck and may the “best bulbs” win!

Northern lights!

A severe geomagnetic storm from a solar flare caused the northern lights to appear in the sky across much of Nebraska and the northern half of the United States Tuesday night.

Back before COVID-19, some of us started making plans for an evening of folk music from the 50s, 60s and 70s.... live acoustic music that ties back to earlier days and speaks to the heart and head at the same time.

The COVID shutdown waylaid those plans, but the dream didn't die. Award winning musician Jim Calhoun recently brought some new energy to the project, so we have put this show together with songs from the best groups of the era.
Hope you can attend!
