About 30 minutes ago there was an accident on I-75N near MM191. Video provided by F. Rocha shows good Samaritans apparently attempting to assist possible occupants. There are unconfirmed reports of a fatality.

VIDEO HAS BEEN REMOVED DUE TO UNCONFIRMED REPORTS THAT SOMEONE MAY HAVE BEEN IN THE VEHICLE AT THE TIME OF THE FIRE.

I-75N right now near MM191. Vehicle crash with fire at approximately 2:30PM. Northbound travelers are seeing heavy delays as crews attempt to clear the scene.

I-75N right now. Traffic accident with fire.

Update: Followers of North Port News and Traffic Report who were on scene have indicated that more than one person was in the truck when it burst into flames. Good Samaritans attempted everything possible to save these people. No official updates from law enforcement or Fire/EMS yet. We have removed earlier video and photos out of respect for family and possible victims.

North Port trash collection reminder.

North Port Solid Waste does not provide collection service on the following holidays:

New Year’s Day
Independence Day
Labor Day
Thanksgiving
Christmas Day
When these holidays fall during the week, collection will be delayed one day for the remainder of the week. Solid Waste collects on all other holidays.

You could always discard your trash on I-75. No one will notice the difference these days.

The Charlotte County Sheriff's Office arrested Antonio Felix, 25, who they say purchased a gun for another teenager who subsequently used it to kill another teen.

Antonio Felix allegedly bought the gun at a local gun shop and gave it to 19-year-old Michael Balunas. Balunas is charged with second-degree murder for the death of 17-year-old Anthony Romero.

The sheriff's office said Balunas asked Felix to get him a gun because of a long-standing "deadly beef" with Romero.

Balunas was on probation and under the age of 21 and could not purchase a firearm from an FFL retailer. The sheriff's office said Felix bought the gun on April 11, 2025 and picked it up on April 24. Detectives said that same day, Balunas posted photos with the gun on social media and bragged about "legally" having it.

On July 5, 2025, the sheriff's office said Balunas shot and killed Romero near Hernando Avenue and Easy Street in Port Charlotte. Balunas was hit in the leg as the two exchanged gunfire, the sheriff's office said.

18-year-old Octavion Washington was also arrested and charged as a principle for the homicide.
