Fritz’s Polka Band: Woodstock ’99, Breaking Bad and a Father’s Legacy

Fritz’s Polka Band has spent nearly five decades proving that polka music is much more than a stereotype.

In this episode of the Skip Happens Podcast, Skip Clark sits down with Fritz Scherz to discuss the band’s remarkable journey—from its beginnings in Verona, New York, with Fritz and his father, Fred Sr., to performing at Woodstock ’99 and having its music featured on the acclaimed television series Breaking Bad.

Fritz shares stories about learning the accordion as a child, playing his first show at eight years old, building the band alongside his father and continuing the music after Fred’s passing.

The conversation also explores the emotional story behind “Hands of Time,” the album and song inspired by lyrics Fritz’s father gave him shortly before his death. Fritz also discusses his Syracuse Area Music Hall of Fame recognition, his induction into the National Cleveland-Style Polka Hall of Fame and the surprising variety audiences hear at a Fritz’s Polka Band performance.

This is a story about family, perseverance, Central New York roots and a band that has never been afraid to break the rules.

Standing on the Grand Ole Opry stage is a lifelong dream. The thought of performing there brings tears to the eyes. I refused to step into the circle on a tour, saving it for the moment I can sing there myself. I'm ready to tell that story.

Tori Rose joins Skip Clark on the Skip Happens Podcast for a real, funny, and heartfelt conversation about chasing country music dreams, moving to Nashville, CMA Fest, family, songwriting, and her new song “South of Southern.”

Tori talks about growing up in a tiny Southwestern Pennsylvania town, discovering music at a young age, moving to Florida, performing in Orlando, and eventually making the move to Nashville. She also shares what it was like opening for Trace Adkins, working with producer Mickey Jack Cones, dealing with criticism, and why “South of Southern” felt like the right song to record even though she didn’t write it.

Plus, Tori talks about her love of Carrie Underwood, Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn, Journey, hockey, coffee, boots, Red Rocks, the Grand Ole Opry, and the one thing that recently made her lose it on her brother: a pepperoni roll.

The stories are real. The music matters. And sometimes the best parts happen when life doesn’t go exactly as planned.

To Central New York first responders, families, and friends fighting unseen battles: It takes immense strength to speak up. Know this: you are seen, you are heard, and there are people who want to help you through this.

If you're struggling in silence, please hear this: It is absolutely okay to ask for help. Asking for help doesn't make you any lesser of a person. It takes immense strength to speak up.
