Today we woke up to a serious gut punch, finding out that Sam Neill had passed away. The reason this was particularly impactful is, though he is probably best known for his role in Jurassic Park, his sci-fi horror movie Event Horizon was probably the most key inspiration in the creation of Void Madness.
Watching that movie as an 11 year old kid and seeing just how terrifying the concept of a pervasive maddening force in a cosmic environment was, was the first time a movie had ever truly scared me but was still something I went back to time and again to rewatch. Then years later when I began the design process for my own Sci-Fi TTRPG that concept of madness and space was so intrinsically connected for me that Void Madness was born and none of that would have been possible without Event Horizon and Sam Neill’s work in that movie.
So we say goodbye and RIP Sam Neill (The original Void Mad Spacer).
