College recruiting has been put on hold for high school athletes. What type of effect has that had on players like New Trier High School football player David Davidkov?

The coronavirus, COVID-19, pandemic has postponed the beginning of the high school sports season so far, meaning that sports like soccer, water polo, badminton, baseball and lacrosse have had their seasons put on hold as the country waits to find out what to do next.

It’s hard to overstate the type of “open door” policy the Trieschmann family had in its Cherry Street neighborhood for the last 58 years.

Over the decades, the family invited many neighbors and friends to come on in, including an 18-year-old neighborhood teenager who’d been in a motorcycle accident and ended up staying four years. In addition, neighbor kids from blocks all around came daily to climb on the jungle gym or hide in the tree house in the family’s backyard. When a damaging storm struck, Don jumped to clean up and repair whatever was broken at a neighbor’s house.

“We were always open to helping if anybody ever needed it,” Don says. “We’d babysit for kids. We’d make house repairs or shovel their walk. We got to know the neighbors very well.”

North Shore residents are going on a bear hunt, and they’re not scared.

Fans of the beloved children’s book “We’re Going on a Bear Hunt” have been delighted to see stuffed animals popping up in the windows of neighborhood homes, giving kids and adults the chance to simulate a hunt as they comb the streets during the COVID-19 shelter-in-place rule.

ICYMI: Winnetka’s Christine Walker and her family did something novel during the current COVID-19 pandemic.

They pulled puzzles and board games out of a closet in their home and gave them away for free to residents who found themselves homebound because of the need to “shelter in place” during the crisis and who were looking for something more interesting to do.

They pulled puzzles and board games out of a closet in their home and gave them away for free to residents who found themselves homebound because of the need to “shelter in place” during the crisis and who were looking for something more interesting to do.

“It is our gift to the community,” Walker said. “We would like to think we helped increase the amount of family fun time many Winnetka residents and others now have because of our games.”

Meet our Pet of the Week!

"June is an orange tabby who is 2 years old. We adopted June from the Pet Adoption Event in Winnetka last June. It took no time at all for June to settle into her new Winnetka life. She loves chasing chipmunks and squirrels outside, and playing with ribbon and balls around the house. She also likes to sneak-attack our ankles from underneath the couch. She has a deep throaty purr, big green eyes and a sweet personality. She enjoys the occasional dress-up parties with our 6-year-old daughter, Lucy. June is one special girl!"

- The Hourihane Family, of Winnetka
