Norwich University Fins and Feathers

Norwich University Fins and Feathers Fishing and hunting fundraiser to support Norwich University. Events have been defined as Fins (fishing gatherings) or Feathers (hunts).

The Norwich University Fins & Feathers was informally established with a single boat in 2014 by several alumni with a passion for fishing. Now it has grown into a multiple event and multi-region sportsman’s gathering that encourages participants to foster an appreciation for friendship, camaraderie, and our Norwich Values. It provides a gathering alternative for friends of Norwich that do not golf. All proceed from Fins & Feathers events go to the area of greatest need at Norwich University.

Fins & Feathers was founded in 2014 with one boat and a small group of Norwich University alumni who shared a passion for sport and a dedication to their alma mater. What began as an informal gathering has since developed into a series of multi-event, multi-region sporting activities that have become among the most successful and fundraising initiatives in Norwich’s history.

Distinct from traditional fundraising programs, Fins & Feathers events are designed to promote camaraderie, build and strengthen relationships, and enhance the alumni experience.

Fins refers to fishing events and gatherings.
Feathers encompasses bird hunts, clay shoots, and other recreational shooting activities.

Together, these programs provide an alternative to conventional formats by offering meaningful opportunities for alumni and friends who enjoy outdoor sports. The initiative was intentionally structured for scalability, with the long-term vision of hosting events in multiple regions across the country. This allows participants to connect with new communities, cultivate lasting friendships, and engage in local sporting traditions.

Since its inception, Fins & Feathers has raised more than $1,000,000 and contributed to multiple scholarships, alumni programs, and on-campus groups. Fins & Feathers initiatives have also raised awareness of Post-Traumatic Stress and supported student growth through programs such as Sophomore Expeditions. These efforts have had a broad and inclusive impact across campus, benefiting men and women, Corps and Civilian students alike.

On this day in Vermont history: Harold "Doc" Martin is born in Boston in 1899. In 1916, he became the first African-American student admitted to Norwich University in Northfield, where he excelled in a variety of sports.

After his time at Norwich, he went on to teach at Miner Teachers College (now the University of the District of Columbia) before becoming the athletic director at Virginia Union University in 1921 and at Shaw University in 1924.

During World War II, he was promoted to Major and was the director of the Ground School at the Tuskegee Army Air Field in 1943. He died in March 1945 during a cross-country training mission when the plane he was in crashed near Reidsville, North Carolina.

✨Unleash Your Potential!✨

"Too often, we limit ourselves—not because we lack ability, but because we believe in invisible barriers. We tell ourselves we’re not ready, not skilled enough, or that the timing isn’t right. But the truth is, your potential isn’t waiting for permission. It’s waiting for action.

Your potential doesn’t have an expiration date; whether you’re 9 or 90, it’s waiting for you to take action!

Your potential is already within you. It’s time to unleash it."
