Today, we celebrate freedom.
We honor Juneteenth as the day when the last enslaved people were freed, 900 days after the Emancipation Proclamation was enacted.
Here in Denver, our historic Five Points neighborhood has long celebrated this day, with beginnings as a gathering at Otha P. Rice’s Tap Room on Welton Street to today’s annual parade and music festival we celebrate as a city.
 
On Juneteenth, we not only recognize what it took to get to the freedom of those people but also how far we’ve come under the leadership of Black Americans since June 19, 1865 and the work that still remains for all of us in ensuring equality for all.
 
Join me tomorrow at the parade and music festival. Happy Juneteenth!
