Most people have seen them from the comfort of their cars — school crossing guards in their bright yellow jackets, bundled up in the winter, drenched in the rain, sweating in the heat, holding up their stop signs as children cross the streets.

And yet, 30 Norwalkers do this job every morning and afternoon when school is in session.

“I do it for the kids,” 14-year veteran Jody Pignataro said. “You get to learn the kids, and you watch them grow just like your own children. I like knowing that the kids are safe.”
